Bruce Carlini

Bruce Carlini

BandPopAcoustic

Intensely melodic lo-fi closet poster boy replete with insightful lyricism and mathematical precision.

Biography

Best known as singer/songwriter for indie rockers That Busboy Nelson, Carlini has established himself as one of the most promising up-and-coming artists in the burgeoning Montreal music scene.

Side projects include writing and performing on The NDG Basement All-Stars' single (Face It) which was included on Stomp Records' All Skanadian IV. In 2003 Carlini and Lo & the Magnetics guitar player Cris Raz cut two tracks under the Razolini banner. Carlini's earlier pop-punk trio (The Bogarts) were fairly prolific, landing opening slots for acts such as The Slackers and Dashboard Confessional, and headlining numerous smaller events in the interim. The Bogarts were runners-up in CBC's band search competition in 2002.

Carlini continues to perform with That Busboy Nelson in addition to working on an array of solo affairs. Most recently he opened for Canadian icon Joel Plaskett at Main Hall, Montreal in April. An upcoming EP is in the works, to be released on his label P.S. Records in the fall.

Lyrics

Halifax

What the hell? What is wrong with me?
I'm as young as I'll ever be
But somehow I got stuck in my living room again

What is the purpose of this rock and roll band?
There are a million in this shiny white land
We're gonna get famous and have sex in the white limousine

I saw a counselor and said, “Tell me what to do.”
He said "I'm a counselor at a crappy public school,
Do think I want this?"
All of my troubles go round and round and round

I gotta get out of this place before it swallows me
I'll make a new life in England or Italy
At the kitchen table I'll make a laundry list of all the cities I'd like to live in.

But in the kitchen, that's where I keep the wine
I'm having visions of this grandeur till nine
I'm fixing Africa and missiles in space and Syria too

And very slowly I begin to realize
I look quite silly in everybody’s eyes
And in that mindset all my troubles go round…..

Oh but that night in Halifax, we opened beers on the train tracks – you said “If these tracks built this country then we can do anything anything anything that we please.”

Open Area

In case you're wondering. I’m done with wandering.
Though you’ve been pondering if everybody’s searching for someone else
“I want you here with me. Annul that dull decree.” That’s what he said to me.
Showing up a telling lie.

What is this all about? I thought you quelled your doubts
And squared off your roundabouts
I know you know it’s something outta control

With conversations from the city heights
We’re walking weakened beams of neon light
And if he’s on his knees I know I’m right
And I just might fly off the wall

Searching for wide open area
Searching for wide open song
Searching for wide open area
And throwing out what we’ve become

He says he’s found a way to take your breath away
To make it dissipate
You know I know it never ends

With conversations from the city heights
We’re walking weakened beams of neon light
And if he’s on his knees I know I’m right
And I just might fly off the wall

I wanted more from this life instead
Of this runaround, of this run and hide
I wanted more from this life instead
Of this runaround, of the run and hide. hiding on the run

Rock & Roll Professional

Sorry for the urgency but the message just won’t cut it here
You’re a long way from your friends; don’t forget it
I hear you’re a big Wall Street man and it suits your person nicely
But when did you forget that you’re not retired yet?

On the half way to eighty
Turn back. ‘89
You were the life of the party
At what point did all of your plans become Registered Retirement Savings Plans?

We quit the rock ‘n roll to make a little money
And now at forty-six I’m gonna get my kicks
Equipment’s really grand but something’s funny
This vintage isn’t right
I can’t stay up all night

Justin left just three days after news of the tsunami
And Vanessa’s off to NYU, me and Barb don’t know what to do
Olivia made partner and moved down to Miami
Yeah, the nose and chin are new – No – the old ones just wouldn’t do

On the half way to eighty
Turn back. ‘89
You were the life of the party
At what point did all of your plans become Registered Retirement Savings Plans?

We quit the rock ‘n roll to make a little money
And now at forty-six I’m gonna get my kicks
Equipment’s really grand but something’s funny
This vintage isn’t right
I can’t stay up all night
