Nothing

Written By: Bruce Paul

I see the glory…of the new morning.
I see it doesn't matter…anyway.
It happened…without warning.
And I'm left with nothing today.
Because…it's nothing without you.
Nothing—every day.
All I do…is think about you.
But I'm left with nothing today.

I see the faces in the crowd.
They came…because we came to play.
I hear that lead guitar…fast and loud.
But it means nothing to me today.
Because…it's nothing without you.
Nothing—every day.
All I do…is sing about you.
But I'm left with nothing today.

Because…it's nothing without you.
Nothing—every day.
I'm crazy about you.
But I'm left with nothing today.

I know I should look to the light.
I know I should be on my way.
They all tell me: "It'll be all right."
But I'm the one left with nothing today.
Because…it's nothing without you.
Nothing—every day.
All I do…is dream about you.
But I'm left with nothing today….

You Comfort Me

Written By: Bruce Paul

Baby, when you find me
Too weary to laugh…
Unable to weep,
You comfort me.
You comfort me.

Appearing in the crowded room,
I stood before the judge and jury…
And I paid.
Lord, I paid.

Baby, when you find me
Too weary to laugh…
Unable to weep,
You comfort me.
You comfort me.

I look for love like anyone.
Often, I look in vain.
No one can repair the damage.
Baby, you ease the pain.
And you comfort me.
You comfort me.

Heartbroken

Written By: Bruce Paul

Who gets lost in romance?
After the wine…and the candlelight…
And the last…slow dance….
Tell me, who gets lost in romance?
It breaks my heart to think about it,
But I've been heartbroken before.

And who gets hurt in love?
After the last…sacrifice…
And the last…flight of the dove.
Tell me, who gets hurt in love?
It breaks my heart to think about it,
But I've been heartbroken before.

Disappointment and betrayal…
Turmoil at every turn.
We study…every detail…
But…do we ever learn?
Do we ever learn?

And who gets killed in war?
Christians…Muslims…and Jews.
Is there any hope…anymore?
Tell me, who gets killed in war?
It breaks my heart to think about it,
But I've been heartbroken before….

Two Sounds Haunt Me

Written By: Bruce Paul

Two sounds remind me
I can never make it right.
Two sounds haunt me:
A door closing quietly in the night,
And a train rolling somewhere out of sight.

I came home late, one night—
Much later than I said I’d be.
Now, what could I say?
I thought she might be waiting up for me.
I closed the door very quietly.

I sat down at the table
And drank a glass of whisky.
I thought I’d collect my thoughts,
But my thoughts escaped from me
And left me alone, where no man ought to be.

She walked into the room…
Took one look at me.
She said: “I know you had your fun,
But, boy, you made a fool out of me,
And, I’m telling you, that’s not the way it’s going to be.”

And then she walked away—
Effortlessly.
At the front door, she turned and said:
“Don’t bother coming after me.”
And, then, she closed the door very quietly.

I went down to the station,
To make my final plea.
The railroad man took one look….
He said: “Son, she left on the 4:23.”
I said: “This’ll be the death of me.”

Two sounds remind me
I can never make it right.
Two sounds haunt me:
A door closing quietly in the night,
And a train rolling somewhere out of sight.

Burgundy And Gold

Written By: Bruce Paul

The full moon is shining
On the crystal, sparkling snow.
The crazy wind is whining,
Just outside the window.
Black and white brutal cold.
But, inside,
We are warm
In bed together…
In burgundy and gold.

The candle light shining through
The crystal glass of burgundy….
I love you,
And, I know, you love me.
Two joyful souls…
In bed together…
In burgundy and gold.

Together for a while…
Your golden hair tossing
From profile to profile…
Your burgundy lips…
Feeling bold…
In bed together…
In burgundy and gold.

The full moon is shining
On the crystal, sparkling snow.
The crazy wind is whining,
Just outside the window.
Black and white brutal cold.
But, inside,
We are warm
In bed together…
In burgundy and gold….

Hold Me Again

Written By: Bruce Paul

One among how many billion,
I ran all night in the rain—
All the way from the Golden Gate
To the Morrow County jail.
Baby, help me.
Hold me again.
Baby, help me.
Hold me again.

I thought…I thought about you all day.
And I thought about earthly freedom…
And love and money...
And you paid my bail.
Baby, help me.
Hold me again.
Baby, help me.
Hold me again.

One among how many billion,
I’m home alone, now, in the garden.
I look from the old wall
To the maple tree on the hill.
Baby, help me.
Hold me again.
Baby, help me.
Hold me again.
