Discography

The duo Bruvoll/Halvorsen is playing modern norwegian folk music. Their music is based traditional song from Telemark.

Jon Anders Halvorsen is a young folk singer who specialises in songs from his native area of Telemark in southern Norway. Many of these songs have been passed down to him by the older generation of people from Telemark, with whom he maintains a strong relationship. In some cases these people are the only remaining resource of traditional and sometimes even medieval songs.

Jon Anders was awarded the prize for best vocal performer at the 2002 Landskappleiken, Norway's most important competition for folk music.

Over the past year Jon Anders has collaborated with the gifted guitarist Tore Bruvoll, who he met at a folk music festival in Telemark. Tore backs Jon Anders' thoroughly traditional singing with contemporary and internationally influenced guitar work. Together they bring historic songs into a modern context, the effects of which are at times delicate and touching, and at others powerful and moving.
Jon Anders and Tore were chosen in 2002 as the representatives for Norway in the European Broadcasting Union festival of contemporary folk music. Their music has since been broadcast on many of the major world music programmes on European radio stations. The song "Inger's Hevn" (see below) has been broadcast on Late Junction by Fiona Talkington, who described it as 'a song I've fallen in love with'!

Over the years the duo have had concerts in Norway, Denmark, Germany, USA, The Netherlands and in Scotland. Their music has been very well received.

In 2004 they released their first album at Grappa/Heilo, Norways biggest folk/traditional label. The album “Nattsang” (“Nightsongs”), has a quiet atmosphere and on some of their tracks the gitarplaying and singing of Tore and Jon Anders, are supported by the trumpeter Arve Henriksen, the percusionist Per Oddvar Johansen and the violinist Gjermund Larsen.

both Halvorsen and Bruvoll have participated on a large number of records for other artists during the years, and hav collabarated with all sorts of musicians oll over the world.

Bio

In 2001 Tore Bruvoll (guitars) and Jon Anders
Halvorsen (vocal) fi rst performed as a duo. With a
blend of traditional ballads from Jon Anders’ home
county of Telemark, and Tore’s innovative guitar
playing, they soon found themselves giving concerts
all over Norway. Two years later they recorded
their debut album «Nattsang» («Nightsong»)
with a couple of guest musicians, including the
trumpeter extraordinaire, Arve Henriksen.
You are now holding the sequel. After two years of
experimenting in the studio at home, and touring
and collaborating with other musicians, «trillar for
to» («trills for two») is a reality. The idea is still to
mix traditional singing with the music of today, but
with a full band, a male-voice choir and 20 friends
singing along, the breadth of musical expression
has been widened somewhat since the duo’s debut.
The medieval ballads which are the basis for this
recording are characterized by their narratives and
dramatic stories. Stories are sung about the king’s
lost daughters (Kongsdøtrene), the fantastic belt
(Beltevisa), and «Sveinen og den vene møy», in
which a young man abandons a beautiful damsel
on an island, only to get his boat caught up in a
storm.
Some of the songs are inspired by old verses
or melodies. The idea is for the new lyrics and
arrangements to merge with the old songs. The
backdrop of the entire album may be refl ected in
the lyrics of the concluding stanza of the fi nal song.
