Bryan Dunn and the Convenients

Bryan Dunn and the Convenients

New York City, New York, USA
BandRockSinger/Songwriter

The Beatles go Alt-country.

Biography

Bryan Dunn has been performing both solo and in bands in Austin, Tx. and NYC since 1993. The projects have ranged from straightforward rock groups (Echo Juliet and Simple Thing), to 10000 Maniacs-esque folk rock (3 Penny Opera) and ultimately to Bryan Dunn and the Shambles which combine all the myriad influences into one glorious rock and roll mess. His uncle, who toured in a rock band when he was younger, first taught him how to play guitar when he was 14, and since then, he's been playing and writing songs whether or not anybody was around to listen to them. He devoured 60s rock in high school, especially the Beatles, but after moving to Austin for college, he started listening to anything available in the eclectic music scene there, rock acts such as David Garza and Johnny Goudie, blues musicians like Guy Forsyth, and acoustic vaudevillian excess with the Asylum Street Spankers. After moving to NYC and having some success as the front man for Simple Thing and the guitarist for Maggie Kim, he struck out on his own, put together the basic lineup for the Shambles, and plays frequent shows both solo and with the band around the city.
Of course, Bryan wrote this and finds it a bit odd to refer to myself in the third person.

Lyrics

Audio/Stereo/Radio

Written By: Bryan Dunn

she's in love with the world
the world's in love with her
and love is all you need
such a beautiful girl
it seemed so obvious
to everyone but me

i made no sound
they dressed me up
to put me down
too solid ground

and i said
audio
she's coming through in
stereo
on someone else's
radio
she's everybody's baby

i was a carpenter's son
now i'm a circus clown
but she knows all of this
a semi-passionate one
brought up to bring her down
she sealed it with a kiss

and on and on
she said she didn't mean
to turn me on
she didn't know it was wrong

outside
the world went on without her
i swear
i thought she'd never know
but in my defense
this cardboard dissident
and every other dollar spent
to reach her

now i'm in love with the world
the world's in love with me
and love is all you need
it came in through the girl
it seems so obvious
she taught me how to breathe

in out and in
you know i never thought
i'd see you again
my little vampire friend

Leaving Austin, 7AM

Written By: Bryan Dunn

The next room a girl lies sleeping
southern comfort, shallow breathing
everybody noticed at the wedding
tears of comfort, joy, and sorrow
as today shall be tomorrow
songs of love and books about forgetting

but i never said
that god was watching you, my love
and i never said
i stopped wanting you, my love

so come on down
wear that dress
we are broken
we are blessed
we are just like
all the rest

follow me down to the water
softly singing boatman's daughter
at the river all will be revealed
have you come for absolution
music, wine, or revolution
at the river we shall all be healed

and i never said
that i was watching you, my love
and i never said
god stopped wanting you, my love

so come on down
wear that dress
we are broken
we are blessed
we are just like

when you held that drunken gospel in your hands
all the sins of god and man
did it help you understand
where i've been coming from

you are home to me

Geraldine

Written By: Bryan Dunn

i'm calling you from the city, geraldine
i know it's not the best way to say goodbye
but when you read it in the paper in the morning
i don't want you to be surprised

they're going to say some things about me
and some of them are true
but while i never told you everything
honey, i never lied to you

geraldine, there's a lot of things i've seen
and the less you know the better
someday i'll write you a letter
filled with cigarettes and girlie magazines
geraldine

everybody's got their secrets, geraldine
i know everybody has got a past
but i was never really one for confessions
and you never thought to ask

i know you'd probably come with me
but i'm better off alone
i'm going to keep this conversation short
just in case they've tapped your phone

geraldine, some people can be mean
but this time i've got a head start
oh, you'll always be my sweetheart
of the rodeo and south new jersey queen
geraldine

my mother was a factory girl
my father was a railroad song
and if i had an extra day or so
i'd tell you about
all of these things that i have done wrong

when you wake up in the morning, geraldine
if all goes well i will be miles away
where i'm going, how i'll get there, if i'll see you again
i'm not at liberty to say

i know you'll ask yourself some questions
and then you'll probably start to cry
and i know you want to hear i love you
but baby, i don't want to lie

geraldine, these lights are turning green
i can't speak to you much longer
that buzzing sound is getting stronger
and i'm afraid you've led them straight to me
geraldine

Flowers

Written By: Bryan Dunn

I was going to send you flowers
but I bought myself a beer
Lillies are for mourning
but I won't shed a tear
If I stop to smell the roses
I'd just wish you were here
I was going to send you flowers
but I bought myself a beer

I was going to buy you diamonds
but I started drinking gin
I never cared for sapphires
but I brought the bottle in
Maybe I'm a loser
but it's really hard to win
I was going to buy you diamonds
but I started drinking gin

My head is full of liquor
And my heart is full of you
And maybe you don't love me
baby, i don't love me, too

I was going to write a love song
but I opened up the wine
If it's good enough for Hemingway
I figured I'd be fine
But your hair is kind of orange
and I couldn't find a rhyme
I was going to write a love song
but I opened up the wine

I was going to say "I love you"
but i had a fifth of Jack
If I put the words together
well, maybe you'd come back
I was staring at your picture
when everything went black
I was going to say "I love you"
but I had a fifth of Jack
