Bryan Field McFarland

BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

Pondering life's quests & questions with "spiritfolk", innovative covers, americana, and story songs.

Biography

With calculated vocals drawing comparisons to some of his contemporary influences - James Taylor, Bruce Cockburn, David Wilcox - Bryan's altered tuning guitar work just might owe more to an experience he had as a three-year-old. Bryan recalls, "At the first concert I attended, I was mesmerized by the guitar playing of Chet Atkins."

Though his songwriting seeds were sewn as a child, it took a bachelor's degree in English Literature, a master's in Divinity and a career as a pastor and campus minister to send him in the direction he's headed these days.

Bryan not only plays house concerts and listening rooms, but also provides workshops/retreats on a variety of topics. Go to for more information.

With the release of "All That Matters" Bryan has all 12 songs in MediaShout software for lyric projection. This can be an effective, moving, and transformational worship/concert experience.

Bryan lives in Greensboro, NC with his wife, daughter, two dogs and a cat.

Lyrics

Way

Written By: Bryan Field McFarland

Out in the open desperately hopin surf won't change castles too soon.
Off in the distance roams my resistance slouching away on the dune.

Dragons and pirate ships, wagons and potato chips
shared 'neath the sky by the sea.
Comic book characters are overlooked banisters on bridges between you and me.

There's a light. Can you see it? Up above, down the way.
There's a life. Can you be it? False or true. No way. Way.

You were the architect using your intellect there in the sand and the foam. Designing a mansion. Refining expansion.
As waves brought the water back home.

Coming and going. Falling and flowing.
The rhythm of waves on the beach. Common, exotic, reckless, hypnotic,
within and out of our reach.

There's a light. Can you see it? Up above, down the way.
There's a life. Can you be it? False or true. No way. Way.

On the waves. In the sky. On the wind. In your eyes. In the now. On the way.

A realm you named nautically free flows methodically here in my gray matter sea. And the tide is calling. The tide is calling me back to some ways yet to be.

There's a light. Can you see it? Up above, down the way.
There's a life. Can you be it? False or true. No way. Way.

All That Matters

All That Matters Ó 2006 sassafrasongs ASCAP
w & m: Bryan Field McFarland

All that matters to the bottomline / Is that it all adds up to more
All that matters to the waterline / Is how it laps upon the shore
All that matters when we've run our race /
Before the living from us scatters
Are all the facets of amazing grace / Love is truly all that matters

Side to side and up & down - This right relationship
Turned about and turned around - This gift, this life, this flip
Us & them and you & me - Climbing all life's ladders
Love is woven thoroughly - And love is all that matters

Jesus gave us this decree (Love each other)
"Do this and my friends you'll be" (Love each other)
"Be at home here in my love" (Love each other)
"Here on earth as up above" (Love each other)
Love is patient, love is kind (Love each other)
Love is in and through the daily grind (Love each other)
Love endures beyond the chatter (Love each other)
God is Love and love is all...that...matters.

Side to side and up & down - This right relationship
Turned about and turned around - This gift, this life, this flip
Us & them and you & me - Climbing all life's ladders
Love is woven thoroughly - And love is all that matters

Enough For Everyone

"Enough For Everyone"
words & music by Bryan Field McFarland
copyright 2007 sassafrasongs ASCAP

The world would have us believe there's a scarcity.
Not enough for all of "them" AND you & me.
Yeah, the world would keep us afraid so we'll hoard it all.
While the truth we rarely see, but this is what we believe...

There's enough, there's enough
Enough for everyone
More than enough, enough for us
Enough for everyone [repeat]

How long will it take till "us" means ALL OF US?
Planetary, universal - All of us!?
How long before we see what we throw away…
And that thousands of children die each & every day... EVEN THOUGH

There's enough, there's enough
Enough for everyone
More than enough, enough for us
Enough for everyone [repeat]

Yes, our cup IS overflowing,
but we plow crops back into the ground.
We can live our faith by showing
that we can turn this all around 'cause…

There's enough, there's enough
Enough for everyone
More than enough, enough for us
Enough for everyone [repeat]

Call That Christmas

Written By: Bryan Field McFarland & Tommy Brown

She took a yellow construction paper star from the tree at the Outlet mall
She tugged at my pants and at my heart with a request so sweet & small
"Dad we have so much already. There's not a thing I really need.
And there are so many stars on this tree.

CHORUS:
Let's take 'em all and call that Christmas.
Let's take 'em all," she said to me.
Let's take 'em all - give what they need and share the love we've seen
Let's take 'em all and call that Christmas

What could I say - except okay - we took every single one of those stars
She took them home - this was not ours alone - her excitment catching fire
She worked all week - her friends pitching in - giving up "Nintendo time"
There were more important things on their minds

CHORUS

Bridge:
Christmas had become a time of getting what I think I need
Of shopping more in crowded stores - of specials, sales and greed
It took a tug of tenderness and an innocent appeal
For Christmas to become again what's real

Like the smile on a face and warm embrace
Giving thanks for family & friends
Finding that those needing food and clothes aren't that different from us in the end
We thanked God for life's good gifts - remembering the reason
With sights, sounds, and songs of the season

CHORUS
