MY MUSIC
- I'm fascinated and obsessed by songwriting and enthralled by audience reaction to my songs;
- I was a finalist in the 2007 UK Songwriting Contest (www.songwritingcontest.co.uk) for 'Be My Bernie Taupin', a bit of a homage to Bernie and Elton but really more about the wonderment of any partnership which endures through bad times and good;
- I was also a double-semi-finalist in the 2007 UK Songwriting Contest;
- I am a bit of a genre misfit - somewhere between rock/pop/acoustic/electronic.
MY BAND
- Live I sing and accompany myself on acoustic or electric guitar, or occasionally mandolin;
- In the studio I also play a bit of piano, drums and bass, though I usually ask more talented friends to play these;
- Andy Hawkins runs a notable studio in Leeds, and has played drums, bass and keyboards for me;
- Shaun Hayward and Joe Kenny, until recently, also ran a notable studio in Leeds and have, between them, played drums, bass and keyboards for me;
- Gwil Selwood, long-standing friend and local musician, has also helped out with keyboards.
MY INFLUENCES
- I listen to loads of differnt musical styles and 'borrow' from everything;
- Currently I am listening to acts like Fleet Foxes, Coldplay, Midlake, the Holdsteady, Kaiser Chiefs and the Feeling
- Longer term, the Kinks, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Joni Mitchel, Carol King, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Winwood and Elvis Costello have all been strong influences.
MY STORY
Originally from Newcastle, I then spent a while in Liverpool, and am currently based in Leeds (UK) . Leeds is where I now do most of my writing, recording and performing. I've self-released 3 EPs and will be issueing a full-length CD in 2008. I'm now looking to reach out beyond the Leeds Scene and to have my songs picked up. Whilst I love to perform myself, I would also be very happy for my songs to be performed by others . More details and songs are available via myspace.com/bryanmatthewsmusic
I have been blind since childhood, and this has definitely played a significant part in my musical journey to date. I think it also forms a part of my songwriting inspiration - There is something about not being able to see that changes the way you do things and the way in which you view the world."
