Looking for a Break

Ringoes’ A Lifelike Story hopes its unique lineup is not so unique

Call it the Hayley effect.

That's the notion that a female-fronted rock band gets taken a little bit more seriously after the success of the Hayley Williams-fronted Paramore.

"They're a hard rock band with a female lead singer," said Bryan Welsh, guitarist for the female-fronted A Lifelike Story from Ringoes. “I definitely think they've opened doors for bands like us."

A Lifelike Story - also Taylor Ruggieri, vocals; Ben Cahill, drums, and Garrett Hoffman, bass - have one more thing in common with Hayley and the gang. Paramore of Tennessee started out in their teens, and A Lifelike Story are teenagers now, having formed in 2005.

"When (Paramore) got signed they were teenagers just like us," Welsh said. "It's hard for teenagers to get shows in clubs, so we have a lot of respect for them."

Lifelike has a driving rock sound that features Ruggieri's soaring vocals. While they're working on a CD release, the band keeps a busy live schedule including one biggie this weekend: Saturday at the Mainstage in Pompton Lakes in a Break Contest gig, which could ultimately land them a spot on this year's Bamboozle Festival in East Rutherford in the spring.

"We love what we do and if we're playing a show it shouldn't matter if there's a thousand people or one person in the audience, we just want to do our best and get better as musicians and expand out horizons," Welsh said.
