"review by riley baugus."

There is a sound. It is the sound of the music that flows down from the mountains. A sound as old as the fiddles that first brought music from the mountains of Scotland, Ireland and Wales to the southern mountains of North America. Like those first fiddlers from the Celtic lands, these musicians carry on the tradition and continue to bring us that old sound in modern times. They draw from traditional material of Surry County, NC as well as introducing us to music they have learned from other places. Their music demonstrates a sense of connection with the pride, conviction and humor of the musicians who first created the traditonal sounds of Southern Appalachia.
The music on this recording reminds me of times spent in the mountains and hearing some old musician pull out a fiddle or banjo and say, “Did you ever hear this one?” Many times the tunes would be ones that you would know. Often they would be the musician’s own composition and other times they would be popular tunes that the musician had heard and learned from a record or the radio during their youth, but hadn’t thought of in 50 years. Regardless, these musicians were expressing themselves and sharing their souls with another person, very proud yet humble and hoping to have that person be moved by what they had heard. Hearing this recording made me recall those feelings of being a child and hearing mountain music, feeling safe and happy and excited all at the same time. May we all remember well the good feelings associated with being young, being in the company of good people and being charmed and fed by the power of music. Riley Baugus 2006 - self
