"it's nice to hear a band that actually is old-school"

From the Boulder Daily Camera
Feb. 8, 2002:

"With so many young groove and jazz groups trying to sound old-school, it's nice to hear a band that actually is old-school: Denver-based Buckner Funken Jazz, whose leader, trumpeter Rod Buckner, was grooving on stage back when Medeski, Martin and Wood still had 8:00 bedtimes. On its latest record, Late For School, the seven-piece outfit mixes up urban-flavored, Headhunters-style 70s jazz-rock, sultry blues and forward-looking acid jazz, sweetened up with keyboards, congas and flute solos. You say you wanna dance? To real music? Get to Round Midnight tonight, when BFJ celebrates the release of the album with a rare Boulder show." - Greg Glasgow

"You like funk?"

You like funk? Damn right you do. If there's ever any question of who's the funkiest jazz band in town, Buckner Funken Jazz answers with absolute authority. Rod Buckner, the founder and leader of this act, is flat-out scary on his trumpet. Whether he's weaving in and out through harmonies on a Miles tune or burning through some James Brown, He'll knock your traditional-jazz-loving ass out.

Bassist Ron Buckner is always in the pocket, and melts into the rhythm section like a stick of butter on a hot plate. The Buckner brothers, together with their bandmates, make up one of the few groups in town who can masterfully transition from Parliament to Charlie Parker and back to the FunkyMeters.

"Sexy, pure funk guitar work"

There are several bands that have thought combining Parliament-style old-school funk with hazzified sensibilities would be a great idea, but there are few who can do the trick like Buckner Funken Jazz.

Sure, the band has everything a jazz aficionado would ever want, be it well-polished ivory tickling or bluesy trumpet squirts-both flavored by practiced musicianship-. Underneath the keyboard melodies and the tooting trumpet creeps a groove-worthy bass line and some sexy, pure funk guitar work.

"A musical Hurricane"

This was first experience with a musical hurricane. To say this band blew my hair back is a gross understatement. I believe these folks do Old School Funk as it is supposed to be done. Their delivery of a groove is the groove I've always looked for, but few musicians could quite produce. The "jazz" on the end of their name must not be taken lightly. Interspersed with the thumb-slap-funk bass lines were intricate morsels of what some of us call real jazz.

The horns in this band teased me mercilessly with deep statements of the heritage of jazz and soul.

Combine the funk, jazz, and sould with a generous dollop of high humor and stage presence and you do indeed have a musical hurrican that took me places I've always longed to go.

Like a scene from a jazz gangster movie, Rod Buckner dove, trumpet in hand, behind the drum set to avoid the storm of bullets hitting the stage. Fresh out of college in the early 70’s, Buckner was gigging around Denver every night with a 10 piece band, jamming hard on Isley Brothers and Tower of Power grooves. No one was seriously injured, but Buckner did catch a round in his knee as he dove for safety.

“Buckylove” as Rod is known in Denver, survived that gig, bullets and all, and together with his brother, Ron “Bsix” Buckner, formed the 8 piece funk/jazz machine known as BUCKNER FUNKEN JAZZ. BFJ has built a solid reputation at the best Colorado venues for their well honed, supremely funky stage show. BFJ Delivers Old School Funk with such authenticity and intensity, that they are known to keep the crowd funken for hours - nonstop. Their sets can blow up the party or implode with quiet intensity, seamlessly transitioning through Miles and Monk to Maceo, and back again.

Buckner Funken Jazz is a true original-recipe, old school funk band. BFJ earned its Funk pedigree by mixing funk grooves and well honed jazz into the stankiest, funkiest, grooviest stage-pounding party show in Denver.

After BFJ played a flashy opening set for funk legend Maceo Parker, Maceo wasnt sure if there was anything left to play. 'Did you guys leave any funk for me?
