Vendredi soir avait lieu le lancement de la toute nouvelle étiquette électro montréalaise Huile Records. C’est dans le Studio Victor du quartier Saint-Henri que les gens se sont réunis pour célébrer l’initiative d’Aisha C Vertus, agente d’artiste et figure connue du hip-hop québécois. Deux jeunes artistes tout récemment signés par l’étiquette montréalaise ont offert des prestations live durant la soirée. Bueller et Terrell Mcleod Richardson se sont partagé la scène du magnifique studio aménagé pour l’occasion. Un jam s’est également improvisé pour clore cette soirée, au grand plaisir des mordus de musique qui s’étaient déplacés. Il y a un peu plus de deux semaines, l’album DreamyLeftFieldFantaisies a été lancé. On s’est assis avec BUeLLER, pour jaser de son dernier opus, de weed et de ses influences.
BUeLLER m’attend patiemment au Parc Laurier, dans les estrades. Malgré mon retard, il me tend une bière avec un sourire. «C’est vendredi soir tsé», me rappelle-t-il. Même s’il est directeur artistique et concepteur de profession, le beatmaking reste sa plus grande passion. Initié à l’âge de 16 ans par son cousin Vlooper et influencé par ses homologues J Dilla, Boogat, Atach Tatuq, entre autres, le producteur montréalais n’en est pas à son premier barbecue.
À 29 ans, BUeLLER a vu la scène Art Beat éclore. «Dans le temps, c’était plus difficile de faire découvrir le beat. L’instrumental était moins populaire aussi. Il fallait rencontrer des gens qui rappaient dans des partys, c’était l’ère pré-myspace», raconte-t-il. «L’évolution du rap a été tellement rapide dernièrement. On est passé de fucking outcasts ou de genre de plaies d’Égypte pour devenir le mainstream shit» explique le beatmaker, conscient de l’avant et de l’après 4,99$, d’Alaclair Ensemble.
Les beats introspectifs et vaporeux qui se retrouvent sur DreamyLeftFieldFantaisies, son dernier album, s’écoutent parfaitement au réveil, en travaillant. Il n’est pas léger pour autant. «C’est un genre de breakup album, une réflexion sur la relation que je venais de vivre. J’ai voulu faire une histoire avec ça», précise-t-il. L’histoire est claire. La première chanson, Ending et la dernière, Beginning, nous indiquent que le beatmaker est passé par une montagne russe d’émotions pour finalement être sauvé du naufrage qu’est l’après-relation. Évidemment, ce n’est pas l’album qui pourrait faire turn up vos partys, et BUeLLER en est parfaitement conscient. «Mon genre de beat, ça fait pas danser le monde. C’est le genre de beat qui impose que tu t’assoies dans un fatboy pis que tu fumes un bat», indique-t-il en riant.
DreamyLeftFieldFantaisies, c’est aussi Montréal. Ça s’entend. L’album est une sorte de preuve que la métropole est culturellement en santé; au niveau du beatmaking du moins. «On encense les beatmakers d’ailleurs, mais ici il y a tellement de trésors cachés. Je pense que Kaytranada est en train de le prouver. En même temps, il faut faire un filtre parce qu’il y en a tellement à Montréal.»
Bien que le membre du Tout’nou Collective (KenLo, Vlooper et BUeLLER) vend parfois ses beats à l’international ou pour des publicités, le beatmaking ne lui suffirait pas. «J’aimerais faire plus de beats pour vraiment en vivre, mais en même temps tout ce que je fais est complémentaire. Je sais pas si je pourrais juste faire ça», précise celui qui est aussi designer et réalisateur à ses heures. Before penning this post about Bueller, I thought long and hard about the work of cartographers (aka mapmakers). According to wikipedia, cartographers’ first task is to set the agenda for the map—will it be a world map outlining political boundaries or a road map detailing highways and backroads or a map depicting landmarks. Then the question becomes how to make the map an accurate representation of the terrain in all its complex undulations of beliefs and actualities, naming the hills and valleys if you will. The final task of the cartographer (and maybe the most important) is to “orchestrate the elements of the map to best convey its message to its audience.” Producer BUeLLER TOUT’NOU goes through each of these processes when arranging his complex layers of abstractions and sounds. I’m pleased that his signature sound is featured on 4 of T4GB’s compositions.

I met Bueller through a friend’s Facebook page, a friend whose musical taste I’ve always trusted and whose FB page I peruse regularly in search of new and fresh tunes. That initial exploration lead me to Bueller’s SoundCloud page where I fell deep into his transient soul. I found his boom bap to be meditative, his knack for placing his snares just behind the beat (in the tradition of 90′s soul) studied, and his layering of intentional noise most headphone-friendly. I reached out to Bueller, asking him to send along some instrumentals. The first track he sent became the song “LateNightSlowDance,” one of the more introspective compositions that appear on T4GB. Bueller is also responsible for production on the opening track, “Get Dressed,” featuring Chaunesti Webb and the closing track “Twilight” featuring Sy Smith.

Our interactions have been strictly via the Internet Superhighway, which introduces a whole other conversation about mapping in this age of hyper-technology. Another post for another time:)

BUeLLER, member of the Tout'nou collective (Montréal) along with Vlooper and KenLo Craqnuques, already has six albums under his belt including his latest effort, DMTxBUeLLER, co-produced by his brother DMT. His style and presentation is rooted in Hip-Hop, but contains much soul as he utilizes diverse samples that make his most digital-sounding songs seem oddly organic.
