"Shades Hog The Limelight"

6/5/2007 - 12:26:25 PM

Sligo band Burning Shades were plucked from obscurity to become the lucky band to perform in the 2FM 2moro Tour, when it hit town recently. Here, we find out who Burning Shades are and what the future holds for them.

APRIL Fools Day 2006 was the day Sligo band Burning Shades was formed. And despite this unlucky omen, the band have started a promising career after landing a prestigious spot on the 2FM 2moro Tour.

To Sligo people keen on keeping an eye on upcoming bands, Burning Shades need no introduction. Previously the band has played with Delorentos in local haunt McGarrigles. And they have been garnering support locally over the past number of months.

But while they had been playing the local scene regularly since forming just over a year ago, it was securing a place on the 2FM 2moro Tour line-up that has really put them on the map. And it came at a good time for the band as many would see this as a fantastic way to get exposure.

For anyone who doesn't know who the band are, they are Stephen Caheny on vocals/guitar, Neill McGarry on lead guitar/vocals, Stephen Horan on bass and Kevin Keogh on drums.

On hearing that the band were selected for the 2FM gig they had this to say: “We were absolutely delighted to have been chosen for the tour and can’t wait to play the gig with such a diverse bunch of bands.” The gig took place on Tuesday, May 22 in the Left Bank in Sligo and Burning Shades got to play alongside a top line-up.

Included in it were Messiah J and the Expert, Giveamanakick and the Flaws, all bands offering quality music.

Burning Shades are an alternative rock/indie band who came together after their mutual love for Mogwai, Foo Fighters and Weezer. After making the decision to form a group, the band began rehearsing together and found they had a melodic and original sound, a vital ingredient to any good band.

During last summer, the band decided to go on a self-promoted tour of Boston in the United States. The tour was such a success that the band found themselves playing to large audiences and progressing musically at the same time. During the tour the Shades’ managed to squeeze in as many radio appearances as possible and recorded a 4-track demo in New Alliance Studios in Boston.

Considering the band are not signed to any label and have not secured a record deal, this three month tour of Boston was some feat in itself.

This obviously cemented the band even more and the chance to play at the 2FM 2moro Tour was not going to be missed.

Since returning to their base in Sligo, they have become popular on the local circuit and as well as playing McGarrigles, the band have played gigs in Shoot the Crows and The Countess Bar in Strandhill.

And while this band could only have a good future ahead of them, its possibly still early days to predict a future.

But one thing is for sure, they held their own alongside bands Messiah J and the Expert and Giveamanakick, something which wouldn't have gone unnoticed.

Helen Cullen of RTÉ said the May 2007 tour was scheduled because “The first RTÉ 2fm 2moro 2our in November 2006 was such a rocking big success”

“In a continued effort to discover and promote new Irish talent RTÉ 2fm decided to bring the tour around the country again.”

Hosted by 2FM DJ Jenny Houston, the night itself was a huge success and it was definitely not the last of Burning Shades, in fact its just the beginning of what should be a great musical journey. - Sligo Weekender
