CORPUS CHRISTI — Bushbullit, one of the longest-running live music acts in the Coastal Bend, will perform at its CD release party at 8 p.m. today at Executive Surf Club, 309 N. Water St. The event is also a tribute concert for the late Bushbullit drummer David “Doc” De Alcala, who died in 2005 at the age of 50.

De Alcala contributed to five songs on the band’s latest CD, “Slidin’ thru Texas.” De Alcala joined Bushbullit in 1999 but also performed with Bushbullit guitarist/vocalist Oscar “O.B.” Gonzalez in The Imposters in the late ‘80s.

Formed in 1976, Bushbullit cut its teeth performing Texas-centric rock and blues at a long-defunct watering hole, Inza’s Lonesome Coyote Saloon. After a hiatus in the mid ‘80s, Gonzalez relaunched Bushbullit in 1988.

Bushbullit is Gonzalez, Eddie Saenz on bass guitar and vocals and Antone Perez on drums and vocals. Free admission, all ages welcome. Information: 884-7873.

Picture it: The notorious Jimi Hendrix Experience opens for rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd playing tribute to blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan.

These 1970s headliners never shared a stage. But thanks to cover band Bushbullit, the spirits of the classic rock and blues icons of decades past come to life in one night, on one stage.

"People think that we're a country band because of our name; but if anything, we are a rock and blues band that can play country music," said 56-year-old frontman and lead guitarist O.B. Gonzalez.

Bushbullit's name refers to the South Texas nickname for an armadillo. The band was formed in 1976 in Alice.

"Our fans show up and they already know what they want to hear; we'll play anything," said Gonzalez, a founding band member.

In the 24 years the three-piece band has officially been together (not including a hiatus from 1982 to 1988), its lineup has changed at least four times. The other members are Sam Stephens on bass and Mike Collins on drums.

In honor of the late drummer David "Doc" De Alcala, who collapsed from a brain aneurysm before a Bushbullit performance in April 2005, Bushbullit plans to release a five-song EP in September. The original material on the CD includes drumming by De Alcala.

Through it all, Bushbullit has never rehearsed in full for a show. Sometimes the band will play tribute to a certain legend for the night, for example, playing all ZZ Top or Jimi Hendrix hits, but no request is too wild.

An audience member once requested that the Santana songs "Evil Ways" and "Black Magic Woman" be played in a row. Though the band had not attempted the songs before, both songs were played by the end of the night.

Gonzalez said the most important factor in choosing what the band will play is the audience. He is known for walking through the audience while playing his wireless guitar, making sure everyone sings and claps to the lyrics of Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" and playing his guitar behind his back.

"I think every musical performance should involve the people," Gonzalez said. "At the end of the night, if I haven't made you feel the music, then I haven't done my job."
