Brooklyn-based BUTCHER KNIVES is a multi-lingual whirlwind of international musical and cultural movements, anchored to a classic kick-you-in-the-eye punk rock aesthetic. BUTCHER KNIVES was founded by Nacho Segura and Niko Matiz after ten years touring with Colombian ska/punk band SKAMPIDA, sharing the stage with the likes of MANU CHAO, GOGOL BORDELLO, GREEN DAY, LENNINGRAD, LOS PERICOS, FERMIN MUGURUZA, and DEVOTCHKA, to name a few.
BUTCHER KNIVES was conceived as a platform on which band members from a diverse array of musical and cultural backgrounds would test the outer limits of their musical dexterity in the context of the simplicity and anarchy of high-energy punk rock. The band’s members collectively hail from five countries, speak six languages, and possess three U.S. passports and a few work visas.
BUTCHER KNIVES cites as influences bands like Carallos, Mano Negra, The Clash, Joxe Ripiau, and Kortatu, and styles ranging from patchanca punk, rockabilly, and reggae, to klezmer, cumbia, and gypsy jazz. The band brands itself as “Gypsybilly.” Said producer/engineer NICK ALBURY, “It’s like if a bunch of drunken pirates took speed and wrote sea shanties.” Whilst sewing its royal oats in the New York City music scene, the band is periodically unveiling tracks from their first full-length album, which is slated for commercial release in its entirety this summer.
