Butter Pretzels is a rap group based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The trio (composed of Mike Skwark, Adam Fainman, and TJ Beliveau-Pattern) describes their music as hip-hop or "stoner rap" and are known for their humorous, clever lyrics, and catchy, contemporary style. They are influenced and inspired by East Coast hip hop, R&B and jazz. The members met in high school and began experimenting with rap in 2009. The group was officially established and named in 2010 (the name "Butter Pretzels," they say comes from a late night snacking episode when they were suggesting group names while eating pretzels).
Butter Pretzels exploded into the Manitoba hip-hop scene in 2012 with the release of their hit song All I Can Remember and self-titled theme song Butter Pretzels, which are featured daily on Winnipeg radio station Streetz 104.7 fm.
In the spring of 2012 the group released their first LP entitled Joint Stupidity, which was produced by local rapper and producer Sketch Williams. The LP is made up laid-back beats, jazz samples, and stoner anthems like Blunt Two and Butter Pretzels. After the release of the album, Butter Pretzels produced a music video for All I Can Remember with local film production company JPegFilm(See link below)
They are known for their high energy and engaging live performances and have put on shows with local artists AudioOpara and Sketch Williams. The group enjoys loosening up their audience by getting on to the floor and performing among the crowd.
Butter Pretzels is currently working on a mixtape, produced by hype-man TJ Belliveau-Pattern which is expected to be released in early 2013; the first single 'Andale' is already a local hit, initiating much hype among fans. Another music video is expected to be released in 2012 with Electric Reel Productions. Pen Clothing approached Butter Pretzels in the fall of 2012 to become a sponsor of the group and is currently working on a line of shirts and sweaters for them which is expected to be released in winter 2012 (See link below).
Butter Pretzels continues to perform live regularly, experiment with new DJs, and try out new styles. They hope to schedule a tour in 2013 to promote the release of their mixtape.
