최고의 변신
이번 '이주의 발견' 테마는 '변신'으로 해두자. 아래 로다운30의 경우도 그렇지만, 단연코 최고의 변신은 바이 바이 배드맨이다. 뭔가 계기가 있었던 걸까. 이렇게 사운드 자체를 '완전한 전회'에 가깝게 돌려놓은 케이스는 흔하지 않다. 매드체스터(Madchester)에 경도된 사운드를 뿜어내던 이들이 매끈한 신스팝 사운드로 체제를 정비하고 나타났다. 앨범의 프로듀스를 맡은 글렌체크(Glen Check) 김준원의 사운드 메이킹과 함께, 밴드는 자신들이 천착해왔고 헌신해왔던 사운드를 아낌없이 비워내는 한편 그 여백을 한 땀 한 땀 새로운 음표들로 메운다. 주지하다시피, 밴드의 포맷을 이런 식으로 회전시킨다는 것은 상당한 용기를 요구하고, 결과에 대한 막중한 책임이 뒤따르는 일이다. 허나 부디 편견을 내려놓고 음반을 정주행해보길. 첫 곡이 터져 나오는 순간부터 당신은 설득당하게 되어 있다. 다시 찾아온 영어 가사와 잘 묻는 보컬, 1980년대 뉴웨이브의 장면을 현대적으로 육화한 듯한 키보드 연주, 심플하지만 공간을 지배하는 곡의 밀도 등은 [Authentic]을 바이 바이 배드맨이 지금껏 내놓은 음반 중 꼭짓점에 놓기를 주저하지 않게 한다. 멋지다. 지성과 센스, 열기와 냉정, 젊음과 경험이 평행선을 그리며 음반의 긴장감을 유지한다. 어떤 곡을 꺼내 들어도 만족할 것이니, 그것은 바이 바이 배드맨의 두 번째 출발을 알림이다. 설득력 있는 그들의 변화
바이 바이 배드맨은 정말 잘하는 록밴드였다. 지금은 못한다는 게 아니라 더 이상 록밴드라고만 하면 안되고 신스팝이나 뉴웨이브 같은 말을 붙여야 한다. 정말 우리가 아는 그 밴드가 맞나 싶을 정도로 전면적인 변화인데 따지고 보면 설득력 있는 변화 같기도 하다. 다시 한 번 말하지만 이 밴드는 음악을 정말 잘했다. 영국 록 밴드들 몇 팀이 바로 떠오른다는 점 때문에 오리지널리티를 내세울 순 없었어도 송라이팅이나 곡의 구성, 아이디어들이 음악적 재능이란 무엇인가 증명하는 표지처럼 여겨졌었다. 음악스타일이 전면적으로 바뀌었지만 음악적 재능은 여전하다. 변화라고 한다면 음악 장르가 가지는 역사적 한계 때문에 다소 복고적이었던 1집 분위기에 비해 모던해지고 트랜디해졌다. 이런 음악(신스팝, 혹은 뉴웨이브의 복고)이 오랜 유행이라 그렇다. 그러고 보니 이 밴드에겐 뭔가 멋져 보이고 쿨한 것을 표현하고 싶은 욕망이 만져진다. 그것은 음악을 하는 중요한 동력 중 하나다. 이 정도 실력, 감각, 표현력을 가진 밴드에게 그것은 당연한 욕망이라는 생각이 든다. 만약 이들의 활동 범위가 영미권라면 반드시 록스타가 됐을텐데, 그게 아쉬울 뿐이다. 또 한가지 아쉬운 것은 '노랑불빛' 같은 재치있는 한글가사가 증발해 버렸다는 점이다. 이런 음악엔 영어가 어울린다는 말은 제발 하지 말아주라. 15년 전에 힙합에서도 똑같이 그랬었는데 지금은 한 명도 그런 말을 안 한다. I listened to Bye Bye Badman‘s Light Beside You a lot back in 2011. Then news came that the band was joining Glen Check‘s Basement Resistance. Then in June, Authentic released. Comparing Light Beside You to Authentic is difficult. There are similarities, but Bye Bye Badman in 2015 is definitely different. That’s not a slight at all, but they’ve definitely taken more cues from Glen Check for the album.

Authentic is a summer album. “Young Wave” makes that very obviously with it laid back tempo and groove focused melody. It’s a great song that fits any lazy day. Then “So Far” continues that theme. I think a lot has to do with how much the low end on each song is presented. The drums sound programmed with the bass drum hitting perfectly while mixing with the bass notes. The keyboards are the icing on each song. It acts as the primary melodic instrument. The guitar doesn’t sit at the top of the mix and sometimes gets lost among the other synth in each song, at least until the bridge.
I do think that Authentic will get a lot of comparisons to Glen Check. While Glen Check is much more electronic dance and Bye Bye Badman is electronic rock, there’s a lot of elements that are common with both. Even though Authentic is 11 songs, it actually sounds like one long extended mix. There are standout singles like “Island Island” and “Invisible,” but if you start from “Young Wave” and listen straight through, you may have problems hearing distinct songs. But I think that’s a talent for the band. Making an entire album sound like one cohesive song and it not getting boring or repetitive is excellent.
If you listened to Bye Bye Badman in 2011, you will notice a big change in their sound. If Authentic is the first introduction, you’ll likely enjoy it a lot.
