"NEW MUSIC: BEYOND MODERN EP"

Beyond Modern is a Washington D.C. based electronic hip hop group that recently dropped a new self titled project. After performing at D.C.‘s Trillectro, their celebrity status has elevated so what better time to drop an EP? Take a listen to the duo’s fresh take on hip hop and download below. Our favorite track is their single, “Tonight”. - Respect Magazine

"New Music: Beyond Modern (@BeyondModern) – The Beyond Modern EP"

After a series of released singles and touring stints, most recently at DC to BC’s first hip hop and electronic music festival Trillectro, Beyond Modern finally debuts their first EP today. Known for being extremely experimental in both sound and lyrics, Beyond Modern’s The Beyond Modern EP surpasses the basic electronic sound I was expecting.

Starting off with the familiar track “Ride Of Your Life” or “#ROYL” as the cool kids call it we hear the mashup electro-hip-pop sound Beyond Modern is becoming known for. Then we move into “Odyssey” which sounds like it could be part of the soundtrack for an urban space themed love story with synth beats and (sexy) vocals. So far, I’m rocking out in my chair, good sign. As I continue to listen to the EP, I start thinking of music pioneers like Girl Talk and The White Panda who also use a “dance/pop” sound in their music. Beyond Modern’s experimentation is similar to Girl Talk and The White Panda, but instead of culturally recycling music, or remixing, Beyond Modern is creating music with completely original reverberations. And this is what kept my attention. Later tracks on the EP including “Lights Out,’ and my favorite, “Up,” are excellent examples of the modernization of music and how hip hop can be fluidly removed from its box into a number of different genres. A touch of hip hop mixed with techno, dance, pop, and electronic sounds complete the album in what is exactly Beyond Modern. - TheyCallMeAyo.com

Bio

Since their modest beginnings as two music aficionado college students in a small Baltimore apartment, Beyond Modern has always exhibited two qualities in their music: raw passion and creativity.
Mick Marx, 23, and Sur Jazz, 25, two halves of the musical collective Beyond Modern, were solo Hip-Hop artists when the duo first decided to fuse their talents in 2009. The lyricist and aspiring audio engineer released “The Definition: EPic,” their first full-length album featuring original production under the moniker Sim-PLEX in 2010. The nascent success of these two young artists was a sound that augured something bigger, something inventive. That “something” emerged as “Rebellion EP” (2011), the duo’s first EP as Beyond Modern, pulling from a range iconic influences old and new like Talib Kweli, The Neptunes, Miles Davis, DMX, Prince and Sade.
Often noted as a “breath of fresh air,” Beyond Modern approaches their art as just that. They win over diverse audiences at carefully curated events like FADER presents vitaminwater uncapped LIVE, and Trillectro (DC's first major music festival) with their unique and memorable sound. “We want to create a legacy like those who have inspired our music. Art is lasting. It influences. So ultimately, we want to remain artists...and make people dance,” says Marx.
The result: a fresh take on hip-hop. The duo possesses the raw talent that cultivates beyond where modern music peaks to a sound that fuses genres and takes center to culture. Fervent and unrestrained — “Beyond Modern.”
