"SXSW global: Video clips of 3 standout international acts"

.

The band: Cafe Funque
Hometown: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The showcase: 10 p.m. Saturday at Opal Divine’s Freehouse

"...Lead singer Cacao (Lady Acid) is a rock star. She straight up ruled the stage. Clad in a skeleton costume with a painted face, she shimmied, scowled and even threw up devil horns. She also belted out songs from the bottom of her heart and threw herself writhing onto the floor. Killer...."

March 22, 2009 10:50 PM
Opal Divine's Freehouse.

"...I saw three groups there, all from distant lands. First was Café Funquê, from Brazil. The lead singer was clad in a skeleton costume, her face painted white. Very tight band, a mix of rock, funk and bossa nova. Again, I have some video, but that will have to wait..."

In anticipation of the South by Southwest music festival, which begins today in Austin, Texas, more than a thousand acts—almost twice as many as last year—offered an mp3 to showcase their sound. Once again, PAUL FORD listened to them all.

Bio

Café Funquê (pronounced Cafeh Funkay)

The experienced musicians of this explosive rock band all come from different backgrounds, giving a unique flavor for a super charged mix. Lead singer Cacau(Lady Acid) hails from the the Rio de Janeiro underground; having been an important figure/DJ for years in the eletro/independant club scene. Drummer Gabriel Damasceno, a California native, studied ethnomusicology, and played for years in carnaval powerhouse G.R.E.S. Mangueira. Bassist Flavio Chokito's Brit rock roots are unmistakeable, and has made a living laying down sixteenth notes with many well known bands in the Rio area, such as Pic-Nic, and Seres. Free jazz saxofonist Gabriel Fomm floats in and out of time/space, quoting bossa nova licks, and genuine guitar hero Felipe Aranha lights the stage on fire with his incredible chops attained through countless tours with regional rock stars Cabaret as well as Hereges.

The band has rocked fans with electrifying marathon performances at such local venues as: RioFolia (see performance on youtube) , RioCenaContemporanea, Conversa Fiada, Cinematheque, & Teatro Odisseia to name a few. With 25 original songs rehearsed, and versions of songs by Led Zeppelin, Eurythmics, Michael Jackson, Chico Buarque, and Stevie Wonder there's always something new! Cafe Funque just returned from tour of the south western United States, performing at South By South West 2009 and events hosted by Duke University International Association. The band is currently finishing production of their first full length CD, and making arrangements for the second half of their US tour, in mid-August. All contacts are welcome.
