"Iowan Entertains Troops, Debuts Album"

"The economy is slumping and our country is at war, but there is an assurance in Indianola native alternative-folk singer Caitlin Nicol-Thomas’ voice when she sings about life’s obstacles on the title track of her album, “Troubled Times.” The depth and quality of material on her debut solo album suggests that the Nashville-based musician is mature beyond her 25 years of age."

Bio

Caitlin Nicol-Thomas is an original singer/songwriter/violinist with a fresh writing style rooted in the values of the Midwest and blended with the progressive ideals of the Northeast. Her alternative, folky blues sound is accented by her refreshing vocal style that is both strong and achingly vulnerable.
She released her debut album, Troubled Times, helmed by Los Angeles producer John Gilbertson, in July 2008.

Caitlin was born and raised in Indianola, Iowa. Her first step towards music was in percussion--making the sounds of a galloping horse. Caitlin was pretty close to four years old before she accepted that she wasn't actually a mustang of the plains. She started out on piano and soon moved on to the violin when she found out the bow was strung with horse hair! She spent her high school years "fiddlin'” around showing horses.
Caitlin grew up listening to her Mom and Dad sing to her, and that’s where she first heard such varied musical greats as Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Bonnie Raitt, Doc Watson, the country blues side of the Stones (take a listen, there's a whole albums worth), Iowa’s own The Blue Band, and Hot Tuna with the incredible Papa John Creach. Somewhere in the music she found the open prairie where her mustang would run free.

Despite her strong love for home, she ventured out, living in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston, gaining experience in each city's club circuit. While in Los Angeles she played in the Junior Philharmonic of California and in Boston, she graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where she continued to hone her songwriting, singing, and violin skills. All along the way she played violin/fiddle in multiple jazz, blues, rock/pop and country bands.

When she’s not playing and recording her original material, Caitlin can also be found playing fiddle and acoustic guitar with country artist, Jenn Bostic. They recently returned from an Armed Forces Entertainment tour of military bases in Iraq and Kuwait. This life-changing experience reaffirmed Caitlin's desire to entertain and bring joy and hope to others with her music.

Caitlin also played for US Air Force Bases in Germany in 2008/09.
