Calamity Jazz

Calamity Jazz

Dixieland, swing, ragtime, gospel, folk, classical, Celtic, Latin, music from around the world, children's music, Oktoberfest, more! Music tailored for weddings, special events, parties, celebrations, gatherings large and small. Multi-instrumentalists mix and match to provide the sound you want

With a huge repertoire including our own unique songs and arrangements, Calamity Jazz offers the versatility of multi-instrumentalists who happily solo or team up as small combos of two or three, to a large ensemble to satisfy any client, venue or occasion.

The band is proud to honor our American musical heritage by featuring the music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Sidney Bechet, Paul Whiteman, Turk Murphey, Billie Holliday, Duke Ellington, and other musical legends.

Our mascot “Big George the Bass Saxophone” is a rare treat for audiences, providing a truly authentic Dixieland sound. Clients preferring a more modern sound are pleased to find how easily we shift gears to exchange a trombone for a string bass; a bass sax for a clarinet, alto sax or piano; a drum set for a harmonica.

We are an affectionate co-ed configuration of “four guys & four dolls,” which is most unusual in classic jazz. Other exceptional traits among our membership are a veteran movie and theater actor, a professional writer, and a world class arranger who has charted tunes for everyone from Dionne Warwick to the Bolshoi Ballet. Each one of us brings our own flair and enthusiasm to every performance.

Calamity patrons include major department stores, restaurants, churches, city and county governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, small and large businesses, fairs, festivals, and ice cream parlors …you name it. Whether playing for a wedding or a funeral; a store's grand opening or an anniversary party; a parade or a cocktail party – the variety of tunes and instrumentation are guaranteed to captivate.

Looking for a group to play bluegrass? polkas? Latin music? smooth jazz? children's ditties?
We do that, and more!

Music does make the world a better place!

What a Wonderful World

Written By: Thiele/Weiss/Douglas

I see trees of green
red roses too
I see them bloom
for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue
and clouds of white
the bright blessed day
the dark, sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow
so pretty in the sky
are also on the faces of people goin’ by
I see friends shakin’ hands
saying “how do you do?”
They’re really sayin’ “I love you”

I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more
than I’ll ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

[last time]
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world
(oh, yeah)

Little Sure Shot

Written By: Vicki Cox and Meg Graf

Little Sure Shot, Little Sure Shot
She went Ka-Pow, Ka-Pow, Ka-Pow
Annie don’t point that thing at me

Little Sure Shot, Little Sure Shot
She went Ka-Pow, Ka-Pow, Ka-Pow
Annie just let my ci—gar be

Her life was really full, her new friend Sitting Bull
Praised her skill and called her Little Sure Shot
When she took her good aim, she put grown men to shame
No two of them won half the medals she got

Little Sure Shot, Little Sure Shot
Little lady come take a bow
Ka-Pow, Ka-Pow, Ka-Pow …and how!

Kiss to Build a Dream On

Written By: Louis Armstrong

Give me a kiss to build a dream on,
and my imagination will thrive upon that kiss.
Sweetheart, I ask no more than this,
a kiss to build a dream on.

Give me a kiss before you leave me.
and my imagination will feed my hungry heart.
Leave me one thing before we part,
a kiss to build a dream on.

When I'm alone with my fancies,
I'll be with you, weaving romances, makin' believe they're true.

Give me your lips for just a moment,
and my imagination will make that moment live.

Give me what you alone can give, a kiss to build a dream on.

Set List

A typical set is one hour in length, but sets can be tailored depending on the event and circumstances. Whether providing background music at a banquet, dance music for a party, playing in a parade or for a memorial service, tunes are selected to reflect the atmosphere and tastes of the clientele. The band can perform cover songs, as well as folk tunes, blues, gospel, show tunes, novelty numbers, classic jazz, swing, and more.

Do you love Frank Sinatra, and want to hear mostly the tunes he made famous? We'll play "The Continental," "All of Me," "The Summer Wind," and other favorites from his songbook.

If you have a theme -- any theme! -- let us know, and we'll craft a tune list specifically focused on your selection. Some of the themes we have been asked to provide music for are: rivers [Riverside Blues; Down by the Riverside; Old Man River; Up a Lazy River; Beautiful Ohio; By the Banks of the Wabash]; ladies' names [Dinah; Margie; Ida Sweet as Apple Cider; Laura; Aunt Hagar'
