Bio

Detroit/New York based jazz musician Caleb Curtis has shown himself to be an engaging and entertaining saxophonist and composer. He is inspired by musicians who present themselves and their music honestly and with great passion such as alto saxophonists Johnny Hodges, Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Eric Dolphy, Dick Oatts, and Jaleel Shaw. Curtis studied music at Michigan State University and performed at popular Michigan jazz venues such as Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, The Firefly Club, Cliff Bell’s, The Michigan Theater, Orchestra Hall (Detroit), Kerrytown Concert House, The Union, as well as at The Detroit International Jazz Festival and the Lansing Jazz Festival. Caleb has appeared as a leader and as a sideman with the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra and The Paul Keller Orchestra. He also led his band in radio performances on numerous radio shows in Michigan and New York including The Mitch Albom Show, The Barry Z Show, and Live from Blue Lake with Lazaro Vega. Spending considerable amount of time out East (Brooklyn, NY), Caleb has performed at Small’s Jazz Club, Cleopatra's Needle, The Garage, Puppet’s Jazz Bar, Puffin Cultural Forum, and The Jazz Spot among others.

Curtis is joined by Chris Lawrence, one of the most sought after young trumpet players on the Michigan jazz scene. Lawrence was a four year member of the Grammy nominated WMU Jazz Orchestra, and plays in a style reminiscent of Kenny Dorham, Tom Harrell, Art Farmer, and Chet Baker. They are often joined by great musicians such as: North Texas State One O'Clock Band alum Jordan Schug on bass, and legendary pianist/ 1993/1999 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Piano Competition Semi-Finalist Rick Roe on piano. The drum chair is split between two of The Motor City's finest drummers, Rob Avsharian and Nate Winn. The Caleb Curtis quintet has headlined at major Metro Detroit venues such as Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Cliff Bell's Jazz Club, The Cadieux Cafe, and The Canterbury House, amongst others. Caleb Curtis and Chris Lawrence are also available for clinics and workshops geared toward any age level. For more info on the quintet you can visit:
