"Cd Reviews - November 2011: Calico Queen - Calico Queen"

Calico Queen is a band from the Bellingham and Bow areas, whose members include Kait Raymond (vocals), Robbie Duffy (guitar), Connor Specht (bass), and Dillion Finnegan (drums).

Raymond’s slightly raspy and haunting voice is the diversifying factor for Calico Queen. Recalling the glorious powerhouse 80's glam rock ladies of the past, Raymond radiates drive with each chord. Steady beats and heavy strings are the foundation of this group, urging the listeners to listen closely. Calico Queen’s self-titled album was recorded in their “jam room” on Samish Island, yet the quality seems high.

Calico Queen truly shines when the songs add a hint of soul mixed with rock ‘n’ roll, particularly in “Orchid” and “Burn.” If the White Stripes removed Jack White from vocals, they would be near twins with Calico Queen. A “Calico Stripes” collaboration? Maybe one day. For now, this talented young band continues to develop their sound together. Some tracks build to a crescendo while others start off immediately with a bang. All the songs evoke vigorous head bobbing, which is a distinct trait.

Calico Queen was formed in fall of 2010 and has been building their playing repertoire, from house shows to the Cabin Tavern. And they show no signs of slowing down. Limitations are not in the vocabulary of this young troupe. They do not have universal likeability nor a wide range in the diversity in their songs. But for some reason, Calico Queen has an appeal that is undeniable. Definitely worth listening to at least once to adequately determine if they’re the band for you. And if they’re not, that is okay. Calico Queen is an album that’s meant to simply be enjoyed. You can sense that the band is having fun on each track. Calico Queen is not trying hard to please everyone, they are discovering themselves and appreciative fans will follow them through their musical evolution.

Bio

Calico Queen began as a way to get out some of the songs that Robbie and Kaitlyn had been writing during the summer of 2010. Dillon and Connor had previously played with Kaitlyn in the short lived band The Reservation Cops, so when we decided to start playing live we had an easy choice on who to add to fill the roles of drummer and bassist. We cultivated a setlist of songs during the winter of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. We used our influences to create songs that were heavy and sweet and danced in places that are hidden in the shadows but that can lead you to the light. Some of those influences include The Misfits, Blink 182, The Beatles, The Doors, Say Anything, Queens of The Stone Age, Kyuss, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Wolfmother, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Jeff the Brotherhood, The Seeds, The Dead Weather, The White Stripes, Steppenwolf and everything in between. Honestly we are all fans of music in general and we take everything we hear and love and use it to fuel our own musical exploration. We are a hard rock band with a chick singer with guts and thats what sets us apart from the norm. We are always trying to expand our musical horizons. We want nothing more than to bring what we have to offer to the table, and bring our music to the people who are longing to hear it.
