Feeling a bit camera shy

Bio

The band’s impassioned performances begin and end with the deceptively shy Hobbs. Her voice is a wonder, containing the angst and elegance of P.J. Harvey, Sinéad O’Connor, Kim Deal, and David Bowie. It’s the perfect instrument to convey her cryptic, emotionally charged lyrics, which she delivers with the aid of some crunchy guitar tone and charged up power chords.

Hobbs’ open-ended approach to music means Calyx can sound like anything and it only helps matters that she’s got a like-minded rhythm section to support her. Since his time in Black Cabbage, Tristan O’Malley has earned a reputation as an ace bassist and he gives Calyx its groove. His time fronting the Neutron Stars and playing guitar/singing in the Barmitzvah Brothers, Dry Tickle, and the Cryin’ Out Loud Choir have all sweetened his pipes enough so that he can offer Calyx some magical back-up vocals.

Vish Khanna is an expressive, hard-hitting drummer and, in that regard, Calyx is his dream gig. His early years in the southern Ontario hardcore scene first exposed him to the idea of hitting a drum with everything he had. Those experiences coupled with some deep listening to Levon Helm have made Khanna the drummer he is today and he might be credited with giving Calyx its punch (and its paunch). Khanna also plays drums in the Nathan Coles Outfit and occasionally fronts the Cryin’ Out Loud Choir.

So there you have it. A hypnotic power-trio with love and rock on its mind. On any given day, Calyx is reminiscent of P.J. Harvey, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, the Pixies, the Breeders, Fugazi, Shellac, Bad Religion, the Sugarcubes, and Nirvana among others.
