"R&B Singer/Songwriter Cameen"

" Cameen Copeland is both a talented vocalist and composer. His music is an ecclectic mix of R&B, pop/rcok, and hip-hop; there are even some jazz and gospel influences evident to the careful listener. He even has the ability to transpose characters vocally from song to song, which makes his music never tiring to listen to. Cameen is definitely an artist worth checking out( and when he tops Billboard you can coolly state you've been a fan from back when...)"- John Shirley, Contributing Editor for recording Magazine. - Recording magazine

"R&B Artist Cameen"

Artist: Cameen
Album: LuvJoy
Review by Alex Henderson

The music of Nashua, NH-based singer Cameen Copeland has been described as an eclectic mixture of R&B, pop-rock, jazz and hip-hop. But any R&B stations that might be worried about playing his five track EP Luv-Joy because of the pop-rock part or the jazz part need not worry. Drawing on direct or indirect influences that range from R. Kelly to Usher to Aaron Hall, Copeland is very much a modern R&B singer; R&B is his orientation. And while pop-rock or jazz might be an influence on some of his other material (Copeland, as of May 2011, has written more than 40 songs), it isn’t an influence on any of the five songs heard on Luv-Joy. Hip-hop, however, is most definitely an influence on this 2011 release. In fact, the hip-hop influence is as strong as the romantic “Addicted” as it is on the high-tech funk of “Get It On,” “Play,” “She’s Got Fire” and “The Formula.”

Saying that Copeland is hip-hop-influenced is not to say that he does a lot of rapping on Luv-Joy. Actually, Copeland doesn’t rap at all on this EP, nor does he feature any rappers. But production-wise, the hip-hop influence is impossible to miss. And Luv-Joy underscores the fact that even if an R&B release doesn’t include any rapping at all, its beats can be consistently mindful of hip-hop.

Although not a ballad, the medium-tempo “Addicted” is easily the EP’s most romantic offering. The tune is smooth and relaxed yet funky in a laid-back way. It isn’t aimed at the dance floor (unless one is specifically interested in slow dancing). But the dance floor is definitely a high priority on “Get It On,” a hip-hop-drenched modern funk number along the lines of Usher’s “Yeah.” The track is quite friendly to clubs and radio stations that favor a “banging hip-hop and R&B” format. The same goes for “Play,” “She’s Got Fire” and “The Formula,” all of which are examples of modern funk and are friendly to urban radio stations as well as to dance clubs that specifically favor an R&B/hip-hop format. If a deejay for either an urban radio station or a R&B/hip-hop club played “Get It On,” “Play,” “She’s Got Fire” or “The Formula” in a set that also included (just to give a handful of examples) Kanye West, Usher, Chris Brown, R. Kelly, Ludacris and Jay-Z, any of those songs would fit right in. And again, the fact that Copeland doesn’t inundate listeners with rapping on this EP doesn’t mean that either radio or club deejays will think that it lacks hip-hop appeal. Copeland is an R&B singer, but he is an R&B singer whose beats make it clear that he grew up listening to hip-hop extensively.

As a vocalist, Copeland can be expressive. He puts a lot of energy into this material, which is competent and likable. The grooves are catchy enough, but they aren’t mind-blowing. Although,Copeland has some things in common with Usher and R. Kelly stylistically. He still has room for growth and development. Nonetheless, there is alot of potential. And, Luv-Joy indicates that he is worth keeping an eye on.

Hey Cameen, its Stuart the Music Director at WWS Magazine.

I wanted to follow up with you on the music you sent us. We checked it out yesterday, and it’s great stuff, we really like to do a Feature on you. We mostly cover Top 40, as you know, but we always support good independent musicians.

We have readers in more than 25 countries and a Feature gives you a chance to put yourself in front of them. If they like it, your music can spread fast.

The format is like an interview so we’ll send you some questions and put it all together.

Below is an interview we did recently with TI as an example of what it will look like.

Bio

R&B singer/songwriter Cameen borrows from a wide array of musical genres to offer a cutting-edge Urban R&B/Soul and pop sound that's flavored with the right pinch of hip-hop.

He unabashedly uses his lifelong connection to jazz, blues and R&B to create music that is sensual and spiritual. And his style is at once timely and progressive: He's a singer who makes the most of melodic complexity, unforgettable hooks and radio-ready beats.

Cameen's personality, flair, and steadfast professional work ethic engages others with a sort of contagion. Whether in the studio or on stage, he delivers a riveting, crisp and uncompromising performance.

"Cameen Copeland is both a talented vocalist and composer. Yes, his music is an ecclectic mix of a number of genres. However, what's impressed me most, is his ability to change vocal styles to fit multiple songs."

-John Shirley, Contributing Editor for Recording Magazine
