How did you get to where you are today with your music?

Persistence and networking. I knew next to nothing about the business when I started out, and while my parents have always been very supportive, I knew it was up to me to gain every bit of knowledge I could about this crazy career path. I would spend HOURS online “googling” everything from agents, managers, labels, songwriters and producers, to reading articles and publications on the industry. One person and opportunity would somehow always lead me to another, even if the initial event itself didn’t pan out. It just became a snowball effect after that. I’ve learned that every person you meet will end up being an asset to you in some way.

You seem very young. How old were you when you started performing?

I get this question a lot! I am actually 22, even though most people think I am around 17 or 18 (my mom says I’ll be glad I have these genes later – haha!!) I started performing at a really young age because I was a dancer growing up, but I really started pursuing music to the extent I am now when I was about 12 or 13 years old.

Before you did this, were you in any other bands?

Haha, this could become quite a list. I started off in a pop duo for a couple of years called “Illusion”, then I did the solo thing for a bit before I was placed in a 5 girl “tween” pop group called “DLG” that was being put together (keep in mind this was all before I could even drive a car). Then I went back to the solo thing again for a few years before I auditioned for and made one of three spots in a pop / urban trio called “Total Knock Outs” (TKO) which was headed up by Angel Carter (reality star on the E! Channel’s “House of Carters” and sister to Nick and Aaron Carter) which moved me to first Orlando, FL, and then Hollywood, CA, with the group. After a couple of years of that, and realizing that my country roots were what I always came back to, I decided to get back to my solo project full time and fuse my love for popular music with my naturally southern “twang.” Hence the direction I am headed in now!

How do you like working with Code Blue Media?

I think it’s great how they connect you to so many resources. There are so many discounts and perks with companies that they have worked out that are so invaluable to a struggling, up and coming musician.

What are some of your major influences that affect your music today?

Mainly just life in general; the good, the bad, the happy, the sad.

What were some of your favorite bands growing up?

I grew up in a house where music was constantly playing and my parents listened to a little bit of everything. I had an OBSESSION with Michael Jackson when I was a child (and I say obsession because most children don’t run around wearing gloves with no fingers at age 4, but that’s another story! Haha). I loved Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, Bette Midler, Peter, Paul & Mary, Anita Baker, quite the array of artists! I’m sure I’m leaving out so many!

What can we expect from you, Cameron, in the near future?

I’ve been speaking with a few labels since the start of the year so hopefully we will work something out, but if not I plan on finishing recording and putting out an album on my own, and then putting a tour together to promote it. So I guess that means I’m gonna be a pretty busy girl :)

Do you believe in UFO's?

Well, without getting too deep, I kinda find it hard to believe that such a magnificent universe has been created and yet that life would be left to only exist on one tiny portion of it. So if that means I think there are UFO’s, then I don’t know, but I definitely think there is probably some sort of life elsewhere.

What do you think of Big Smile Magazine?

I think it’s awesome that you give a voice to the independent artist.

Is there anything that you would like to say to your fans reading this interview?

Thank you!! You are why I continue to do this! I hope to meet you all one day :)

Cameron Marion is a singer/songwriter from the small town of Kernersville, North Carolina. She grew up in a very musical family, and Cameron was soon singing along to an eclectic mix of artists such as Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Barbara Streisand, Michael Jackson and Anita Baker before she was even out of diapers. Even at such a young age she craved the spotlight and kept all of her family and friends entertained.

Cameron started dancing at the age of five, and since then has become well versed in all forms. She attended the prestigious University of North Carolina School of the Arts in their preparatory dance program as a child, and also grew up competing and winning titles in many regional, state and national dance and talent competitions. Throughout the years Cameron sat in and guest sang with local bands at many festivals, clubs, and events before she was out of high school. During that time she was also the lead singer in her church's youth band, where she was in the position to lead week-long praise and worship for hundreds of youth at the PMBA Fall Ridgecrest Retreat. She also has frequented many sporting events throughout the south over the years to lead the National Anthem and has opened ACC & SEC basketball games that have aired on ESPN, Fox Sports South & Raycom Sports.

Cameron has been fortunate enough to have worked in the studio with writers and producers for the NFL, *NSYNC, Jennifer Lopez, Reba McEntire, Aaron Carter, NKOTB & R. Kelly. She has been sought out to demo songs for different songwriters and production teams in many genres, and has opened for and/or shared the stage with Jeff Cook of the Legendary Country Band ALABAMA, Jordan Knight & Donnie Wahlberg from the New Kids on the Block, Multi-platinum Country Recording Artist Gretchen Wilson, Cartel, and most recently, The Little River Band.

In October of 2005, Cameron picked up and moved from her hometown in NC to Orlando, Florida, after auditioning and making one of three spots in the all-girl pop/urban trio Total Knock Outs, which then transplanted her to Hollywood, CA. TKO was headed up by Angel Carter (reality star on the E! Channel's "House of Carters", and sister to Backstreet Boy, Nick and brother, Aaron Carter of Dancing With The Stars). But, after release of a single in 2007, a hiatus from the group led to Cameron returning to the south to pursue her solo project where her roots lie in country fused music. She currently holds the 2-time title (2008 & 2009) of "Female Country Artist of the Year" in the Carolina Music Awards.

On October 5, 2010, Cameron released her 6-song EP, titled “Ashes & Heartache”, which also includes her two previously released singles, "Right Now", and "Save Us", that also has a corresponding music video and has received some radio play throughout the Carolinas. She is also rehearsing and booking shows with her band. Cameron has been featured in local magazines, print ads, television guest spots, and you can also find her as the co-host for a series of infomercials and commercials that air throughout North Carolina.
