Camerouns

The Camerouns use intuition and sensibility as a tool to develop their sound. The Camerouns´ music is about sharing positive aspects of their consciousness and aesthetic appreciation, expressing values of life that make them who they are. Influenced by Brazilian Popular Music (Música Popular Brasileira ou MPB), The Camerouns started playing mainly bossa nova as well as other Brazilian rhythms. As accomplished and experienced musicians, they studied and emulated the sounds of Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Djavan and other great Brazilian musicians, perfecting their own style and sound.
Born in the northeast of Brazil, in the state of Bahia, The Camerouns seemed to be obsessed with music from the beginning. Motivated by the purchase of their first instruments, within a year everyone noticed the result of such constant dedication. This led to the formation of a band made up of brothers and sisters of the same family. During this period The Camerouns were absorbing the rhythmic subtlety of Brazilian pop songs of the time, while also absorbing the rich sound of Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania, Alceu Valença and Tom Jobim. After that, The Camerouns gave up on their small town life in Mata de São João and headed to Bahia's largest city, Salvador, to get a foothold in the music industry and perform many live shows. Although they could find opportunity to play in many night clubs, it was their brief work with Tânia Alves, a singer and actress from Brazil, that put The Camerouns in the lime light of the musical scene in Salvador.
The Camerouns stayed with Tânia Alves only a year. After that they lived a semi-nomadic life. For years they had no fixed address, performing in nightclubs and theaters and participating in many university festivals. The Camerouns have worked with some of the greatest names within the northeastern scene in Brazil, such as Raimundo Sodré who was in France and returned to Brazil to do a series of shows all over the country. He invited The Camerouns to perform for his national tour.
In 2000 The Camerouns entered a new phase in their professional careers. Their first album, "Begin and Moviment" was released in 2000. The album was recorded with the following line up: Ailton Cameron; piano and keyboards, Eddie Cameron; drums, Anna Cameron; voice, Amilton Cameron; bass guitar, Aldemir Cameron; voice and electric guitar and Crispin Cerqueira; percussion. In this album the style of playing mixes influences from various musical lineages and constant experimentation gives them the consolidation of a very unique sound. ‘’Begin and Moviment’’ had a considerable public repercussion and critique thanks to the work done through the site, MP3 and IUMA, which made available the sale of the CD.
In the summer of 2002, the group developed a repertoire of new arrangements, textures and musical concepts and recorded their second album. "Our Silent World" represents the new wave of MPB. It´s bright, ambitious, creative and given to bossa nova influence while adding bits and pieces of The Camerouns' own unique style.
