My songs are always one hundred percent real. In a world of poppy and catchy melodies about topics hardly imaginable, I stand out as an artist who can get people singing... about things that matter. After all my performances, albeit smalls (coffee shops, auditoriams, school libraries), I am always approached by people telling me they connected to my lyrics, felt inspired by my voice, or were just inquiring where my debut album is! I preformed in a truckers bar just off the interstate once, a crowd that is NOT me. But afterwards, I received the same warm acceptance.
My main influence is life. Sounds cheesy. But the human experience is a tumultuous ride. I document it with my songs. Aside from that bands and artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Keane, Death Cab for Cutie, As Tall As Lions, Fall Out Boy, Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Adele, and MANY more inspire me with their pure talent in making great songs.
What sets me apart may be superficial to you, but not to me. What other young African American girl is out there playing her guitar? (State side, sorry Corrine Bailey) Lets face it, young black females dominate R&B and hip hop, and parade around in leotards dancing. Thats not me. I want to be someone else young black girls can look up to.
My story is hardly Oscar worthy, but we all have a past. I started writing when I was 8, just silly songs. My mom got me a keyboard, which I started composing on. Then I got my first guitar from ebAY a few years later (plastic lol), and ever since then, me and guitars have been inseparable. Was voted Most Likely to Become Famous AND Best Singer in my high school of 3000. Was scouted by John Legend's producer, but had to turn him down die to money issues. Enrolled at University of Maryland to major in business. Alexa Chung scouted me to be on her show, as well.
I don't know. If this doesn't get me the recognition I want, I will find it another way.
