"DJ Chris Moyles chews the fat with Will Hayes of Runcorn band CANDIDATE23"

DJ Chris Moyles chews the fat with Will Hayes of Runcorn band CANDIDATE23
Apr 21 2011 by Mark Smith, Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News
RISING stars of the Halton music scene CANDIDATE23 have added celebrity DJ Chris Moyles to their army of fans, as the band scooped a Top 10 hit in the iTunes rock chart.
The Runcorn act has gone from strength to strength since finishing among the finalists of Halton’s Got Talent last year.
Last week band member Will Hayes appeared on BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles Show in a competition, but managed to engage him in chat about the band as well.
Band manager Paul Chadd said: “Chris really took to him.

“Will had entered the ‘celebrity raspberry’ competition but Chris was more interested in the band than the competition.
“So much so that time ran out and the news was some nine minutes late.
“As a result of being on the show the lads’ website crashed as more than 30,000 people tried to view it over a three minute period.
“Overnight they entered the iTunes Rock chart at 19, with One For You, and have now moved up to number 10.”

"Election Time Rocks for CANDIDATE23"

Election time rocks for Candidate 23
17/04/2011
A Runcorn band which got together for Halton's Got Talent are sitting proud at number 10 in the iTunes rock chart - after an appearance on Radio 1's Chris Moyles Show.

Singer Will Hayes had entered the Celebrity Raspberry competition but Chris was more interested in the band than the competition. So much so that the competition music bed ran out and the news was some nine minutes late.

As a result of being on the show the lads' website crashed as over 30, 000 people tried to view it over a three minute period. Overnight they entered the iTunes Rock chart at 19, with One For You, and have now moved up to number 10.

They have had messages of support from all over the world – both direct to the management company and publicly via Facebook and Twitter.

And all of this after being spotted at Halton’s Got Talent.

Halton Borough Council's Community Development Manager Nicola Goodwin said: "We are delighted for the band, they are a smashing bunch of lads who always acknowledge the opportunities that have come their way since being in Halton's Got Talent last year.
"They are living the dream and who knows what will come for any of the artists entering this years competition. We are just finalising our arrangements for Halton's Got Talent 4 and details will be in the press in the coming weeks.
"The hundreds of young people that have participated over the last few years have shown an abundance of talent and it's an opportunity to celebrate our young people in Halton.
"It is appropriate their success has come now, with a name like CANDIDATE23 and elections just around the corner."

"Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts joins Runcorn band CANDIDATE23 for debut single launch"

RUNCORN’S own Nicola Roberts has leant her support to one of the town’s newest up-and-coming young bands.
The Girls Aloud singer was guest of honour at the launch party for CANDIDATE23’s debut single One for You.
She joined a packed house at Liverpool’s cabaret-bar restaurant Blundell Street for the bash.
Indie-rockers CANDIDATE23 were runners up in this year’s Halton’s Got Talent – the borough’s answer to Britain’s Got Talent - where they performed under the name Soundproof.

But despite not finishing in the top spot, they impressed one of the judges - Paul Chadd - who signed them up to his management company.
Paul said: “It was a terrific launch and shows just what a huge impact they will have. “Their following is growing rapidly and there is no limit to what this band can achieve.” “Will (Hayes, lead singer) had half lost his voice so if he can do this heaven knows what they can do when he’s at his best.” - Mark Smith, Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News

"Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts backs fellow Runcorn musos"

WHILE her bandmate Cheryl is busy searching for the next singing superstar on TV, Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts is doing her bit for new talent too.

Insider caught up with Nicola as she lent her backing to fellow Runcorners, band Candidate23, who were launching their debut single.

She joined a packed house at Liverpool cabaret bar/restaurant Blundell Street to give the lads a rousing send-off at their launch party.

Dressed down from her usual Westwood designer favourites, in jeans and boots, she watched the five-piece indie outfit officially release their single One For You.

The lads were runners-up in this year’s Halton’s Got Talent contest – the borough’s own answer to the telly star-search.

They performed then under the name Soundproof and, despite not winning, managed to impress one of the judges, Paul Chadd, enough to sign them up.

Our source at the party reports: “Because Nicola hails from Runcorn originally, she’s supporting the band as they are from her hometown.

“She gave them a cheer on the night and had a chat with them afterwards.”

"CANDIDATE23 - One For You"

Hailing from Runcorn on the outskirts of Liverpool and with their band name a reference to post-punk legends Joy Division, this teenage five-piece mix youthful energy with a keen sense of melody on their feisty debut single One For You. Lead singer Will Hayes’ vocals are full of emotion; lines like “Never look back” and “Put your past away” surely striking a chord with all of us. So often song lyrics seem cheap and disposable, a cheesy mish-mash of clichés; but here, we’re made to feel every word. And then there’s the guitar hooks that bands twice their age would be proud of. All the ingredients for a brilliant song are here and One For You represents a stellar beginning for the band. They even have a fascinating link to pop royalty; drummer Jono Tringham is the cousin of Girls Aloud’s very own Nicola Roberts. Talent clearly runs in the family.
The band describe their sound as a blend between Oasis and the Stereophonics, and it’s a pretty spot-on comparison – Candidate23 carry that same boyish swagger paired with the intelligence and lyrical skill to mark them out as more than just the next bunch of indie clones. In a world where young rock groups are ten-a-penny, Candidate23 have the skill and musicianship to lift them a cut above the rest, their songs playing loud and clear to the masses. - Totally Vivid

Bio

CANDIDATE23 are an English Indie pop/rock band formed in July 2010. Hailed as "more than just the next bunch of Indie clones", they released their debut single One For You in November the same year.

They have played at the likes of Liverpool’s world famous Cavern Club, The Zanzibar, The Picket and HUB Festival’s main stage supporting Funeral for a Friend and The King Blues.

With a bright future and a strong and growing fan base CANDIDATE23 are planning their next release in the Autumn of 2011.

After having their single One For You played on Radio 1's Chris Moyles' Show on the 14 April 2011, the lads website crashed after 30, 000 people tried to view it at once - the next day the track entered the iTunes Rock charts at number 19 and moved up 9 places in 3 hours!
