INTERVIEW WITH ROGER ALAN WADE

Roger Alan Wade get's "Sirius" with Johnny Knoxville

by Ron "Roosterpuddin" Isbell

Who is Roger Alan Wade? Well, he's a musician, a songwriter, a comedian, and a goodwill ambassador for the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. In fact, he's probably the BEST thing to come out of Chattanooga. But, the thing that impresses me most is that he's a man that beat his inner demons and addictions down to make something of himself after he dusted himself off. This is something I can relate to.

His resume is a most impressive one. He has written songs some of country music legends such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank Jr., and George Jones. He has opened as a musical act for the likes of Hank Jr., Steve Earle, and The Allman Brothers, to mention a few. Not too damn shabby, huh? Roger just finished gigs at Bonaroo and The Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Those are two of the biggest festivals you can get around the southeast.

Roger has appeared on MTV2 as a guest on "The Wild Boyz". This is very, very cool. Who DOESN'T love that Jackass crew and Johnny Knoxville?! His cousin, Johnny Knoxville, is and has been heavily promoting him in interviews with late-night heavies like Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O'Brien. Roger also has a weekly radio gig with Johnny Knoxville on Sirius / XM's Outlaw Channel (Sirius 63, XM 12) called "The Big Ass Family Happy Jubilee". Make sure y'all check that out, kids.

I really like Roger. He's very down to earth, and simple. He's also someone you can look up to. Roger was good enough to allow me to pick his mind for a bit. Here's what he had to say.

Question: How old were you when you first started playing?

Answer: Waylon Jennings came through Chattanooga in '77 or '78. I went and got a guitar the next day, and never looked back. I was 21 or 22, I think.

Question: What are some of your influences?

Answer: I read the Bible a lot, and I never got over Hank Williams.

Question: If you could open for anyone, who would it be?

Answer: Robert Johnson in a switchblade juke joint.

Question: If you could hit anyone with a shovel, who would it be?

Answer: Anyone with bad intentions or shady motives.

Question: What are some of your favorite foods and beverages?

Answer: Soup, popsicles, and Willie Nelson Water.

Question: Which musical acts are you really diggin now?

Answer: Loomis Fall, Rick Mayo, Cannon Houck, Chad Yates, Emily Caroyn Dixon, The Gorilla Kings, Nick, Dick, and the Man, Mic Harrison and the High Score (HELL YEA!), Chris Pontius, Dale Watson, Russ Bean, Scot Baker, The Outlaw Angels, Jerry Mynatt, Folkuke, Allun Cormier, Laura Cantrell, Lew Card, Paula Nelson, Dalton Roberts, Willie Nelson, Emmylou, Dylan, Guy Clark, John Prine, Billy Joe Shaver, Jess Colter & Lucinda...

Question: Which venues are your favorite, and do you any funny stories?

Answer: We were playing a dusty ol' ballfield. A storm blew in, lightning fried our equipment. They gave us a watermelon.

Question: Is there anything else you would like to add, Rog?

Answer: Me and Johnny Knoxville have a weekly radio show on Sirius / XM (Sirius 63, XM 12) called "The Big Ass Happy Family Jubilee". It airs Saturday @ 8 p.m. E.S.T , Sunday at midnight E.S.T, Wednesday at 8 p.m. E.S.T , and Friday at 1 a.m. E.S.T. Y'all tune in for some great music and fine jokes...AND, yeah, if you see that crazy-ass Roosterpuddin, see if he can float me twenty bucks 'til Tuesday.

Ok folks, now you have met Roger Alan Wade, and know how the man works. No smoke and mirrors here. This is a very refreshing quality today. Also, you can learn more about Roger on Rogeralanwade.com.

Sophia gears up for animal rescue benefit
Michelle James
Register-Herald Reporter

The third annual Peanut’s Promise to Pets, scheduled for May 10 in downtown Sophia, promises to offer a little something for everyone, co-organizer John Fanary says.

The flea market raises money to support Raleigh County Animal Rescue in its mission of taking in and protecting abandoned animals until they find a permanent home. Animals rescued by RCAR, a “no-kill” organization, receive medical attention and shots and are spayed and neutered in order to stop the cycle of homeless pets.

“Somebody’s got to take the ropes and do something for the animals,” Fanary said, adding, aside from the Raleigh County Humane Society, RCAR is the only other group helping animals in the county.

Peanut’s Promise to Pets takes place in honor of Peanut, the late Sophia “town cat” who vanished in October 2005, prompting a large search throughout town. He was found three months later in Fayettevile and passed away in April 2007, just before the second installment of the event named after him.

As in previous years, the event, sponsored by RCAR and the Stagecoach Salon in Sophia, will include a flea market, food vendors, musical entertainment and a pet contest.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Fanary said.

Among the musical entertainment, RCAR president Patty Mertz said, will be gospel/variety group Erica and the New Beginnings, Cannon Houck, John Dow Meredith, known as “The Medicine Man,” rock group Dead End and the Stotesbury Community Church Choir.

Also, the Candyman from Groovy 94.1 will conduct a live remote from 10 a.m. to noon.

Trophies will be awarded to the winners of the animal contests, which will include categories like best tricks, best dressed, best kisser and longest tail.

Burning Rock ATV Trail director Brian Helmer will also be on hand with hats, T-shirts and information regarding the trail. Area ATV dealerships will attend with information about their products.

Estate jewelry, including a three-diamond platinum ring cluster diamond rings, earrings and a diamond Moose Lodge pin, will be sold through a silent auction.

Fanary, who described the jewelry as “beautiful,” said the items have been appraised by local jewelers and the appraisal value will be published.

For those looking for gifts for their pets, which are welcome to attend the event, handmade items such as toys, Lupin dog and cat leaches and collars will be sold.

Additionally, weather permitting, Mertz said, dogs will be available for adoption.

Fanary says donated items are needed for the flea market.

“We need donations badly,” he said, adding everything but clothing items will be accepted. “If anybody is spring cleaning, bring it to the Stagecoach.”

All donations are tax-deductible.

Anyone interested in donating, participating in the pet contest, becoming a vendor — for a $10 minimum donation — or in need of additional information can contact RCAR at 228-9047 or the Stagecoach at 683-2500.

Bio

1997 was the year. I was a senior in High School. I was a basketball player, but rode the pine. I had a lot of friends, especially girlfriends in school. Mostly, because I threw the best parties, and always had weed for the ladies. Looking back, I suppose I was pretty well liked and respected. Sounds pretty good huh? Well, it was, but it got a lot better when I picked up the guitar and learned every Nirvana, Doors, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Grateful Dead, CCR, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, AC/DC, ZZ Top, STP, and Clapton songs that I could fit into my brain. I would play at all the parties, and everyone thought it was so cool. It was at that moment that I decided that I would play music for the rest of my years!
I started a three piece band my senior year, but it was short lived due to everyone going off to college so they could go to school....again! I decided that that would not be the path that I would take.
After graduation, I took a year off from everything but music. In September of 1999 I moved to Nashville TN, but the strange thing was that I had no intention of trying to "make it" in the music business. I got a job as a Party/Wedding rental delivery guy in Brentwood TN, right outside of Nashville. This was no ordinary rental establishment. We only did events for the rich and famous.
I worked my way up the corporate ladder, and found myself setting up parties and weddings for Nashville's "elite" members of society.
For example, we did many events for the Tennessee Titans (GO TITANS), the Annual Governor's Ball, the CMA's, an event that Vice President, Al Gore gave a speach, to just name a few.....then I get an order to go to the town of Franklin TN, right outside Nashville. I was to deliver 3 tables and 30 chairs. It wasn't until I got into the truck and looked at the address and name of the client that I was to deliver to that I realized I was going to Alan Jackson's house!!! Yea, Alan freakin Jackson!
As I pulled up alongside his huge estate, admiring the massive fountain in the front yard, I punched in the code to open the grand gate. This place looked like the "White House"! The mansion was spectacular! I pulled around to the back of the house, where I was supposed to deliver the tables and chairs, and to my amazement, in his back yard, was a GUITAR SHAPED POOL!!!! Also, a massive 14 door car garage that I'm sure held way more than 14 vehicles. Being a big fan of Mr.Jackson, I was aware that he was an avid car collector. There were 2 garage doors connected to the house, and one started to slowly open....as I got out of the truck to unload the tables and chairs, I look to my left. Mr. Alan Jackson himself was walking toward me!!! He said "Hey, I'm Alan, nice to meet ya", and reached out his hand. I must have shook his hand for at least 20 seconds before I was able to introduce myself! He was the nicest guy you could meet, and didn't act like he was better than the average Joe. We talked for a few minutes, and he offered me some lemonade. Of course I accepted! I quickly drank it, so not to waste his time talking with a super fan, asking stupid questions that he's surely heard a million times. I thanked him, for his hospitality, and told him I would get out of his hair. To my amazement, he totally ignored what I had just said, and was showing me around his back yard!!! As we were walking by his sweet guitar shaped pool something happened that surprises me to this day. He started asking me questions about my life! Totally taken back by this, I got really nervous. I just told him where I was from, and how I ended up in Nashville. When I told him that I was just here for the experience, and to work, he jokingly said that "most West Virginians come to Nashville with a guitar, a dream, and goat to keep em warm at night". Immediately saying he was just messin' with me. It was pretty funny though. I said, "I got a guitar, but no dream really". His natural response was, "oh you play?" As soon as he said that he told me to hold tight for one sec. He went through the garage and into the house. After a minute or two, he emerged with a Taylor 6 string acoustic in one hand, and a Martin 6 string acoustic in the other. I nearly soiled my shorts! He said, "show me what ya got." I was scared to death, and shaking like leaf. There was no way I was gonna just jam some lame cover, because at the time, that's all I knew. I had never written a song at this point. Luckily I could play his song, "Don't Rock the Jukebox." The good Lord was looking down on me that day, because I remembered the chords, and only messed up once. We traded off on verses, and sang the chorus together. At that point, I could say that was the greatest day of my life! I couldn't believe it, but Mr. Jackson told me that I sounded "pretty darn good!" I was on cloud 9, but I had to get back to work. The whole time I was there, which was in all, only about 45 minutes, I had been working up the nerve to ask him for an autograph. After what had
