"Have You Listened to Capra Yet?"

Last Friday night LAist happened to be in the northern outskirts of LA County and decided to check out a local band named Capra. They were the last band in a small revue at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex and were apparently on the last stop on their summer list of shows. We arrived just before their set began and observed a modest crowd.

We would hesitate to call their set small; it would be better characterized as concise. It included “Delusions,” “Cheap Wine & Cigarettes,” “Anabel,” a Led Zeppelin cover, and “Narcotic” to finish out. Each song in the set was enjoyable to listen to, and each band member had the opportunity to show off their talent through these particular song choices.

We’ve heard these talented instrumentalists before when they were called “A Weekend Flight,” but we were eager to see what their new singer brought to the table. Kelly Blatz’ voice was fine-tuned and something fresh. His movements and showmanship were also entertaining, proving that he does have a lot of the right influences. What sold us on his talent was the clarity of his voice, which made his lyrics comprehensive – something you don’t usually find with local rock bands.

The other four members of Capra were not to be upstaged either. Once the Zeppelin cover "Whole Lotta Love" came around, guitar-playing was unabashed and powerful. The drums and bass in particular were tight and rhythmic. The last song of the set, “Narcotic,” was an obvious crowd favorite and had a catchy chorus with huge sing-along-ability.

They were great to see live, and we are looking forward to seeing them on the road again. You can check them out on myspace, of course.

Bio

Capra, the word that unifies a group of young men who live to feed their love for music. With each member coming from different music backgrounds, the five of them collaborate to produce a unique and diverse sound. They write music that focuses on the artistic integrity of the song, while staying true to their roots and influences.

Capra’s alternative approach to rock music combines floating vocal melodies, with smooth, intricate basslines and solid, punching drums. The two guitars work together to make a sound that expands from an ambient clean, or a chiming mid-range growl, to furious fuzz. The modern sound in their lyrics and music attracts fans of a wide demographic.

The band has played a wide variety of places, which includes The Mint – Los Angles, CA and The Aura.

- The song “Narcotic” to be featured in an upcoming independent film directed by award winning AFI graduate Adam Schlacter.

- Adam loves the band and the music so much he will be directing and shooting Capra’s upcoming music video for the song “Narcotic”.
