"Concert Review: Dashboard Confessional w/ The Elwins and Cara Bateman at the Commodore Ballroom – February 21st, 2018"

Supporting Carrabba and the group was singer Cara Bateman and Toronto natives The Elwins. Bateman, a storyteller with her music, put on a charming performance with just her and her guitar. She gave the large, open room an intimate, coffee shop feel. The BC songstress prefaced nearly every song with the story behind it, allowing for the crowd to get to know her. Bateman’s gorgeous voice dazzled the room, and it shows that sometimes keeping it simple can be so impactful. - The Permanent Rain Press

Bio

Cara Bateman is a risk taker — as is evidenced in her most recent writings. With songs like “Make Out With My Ex” and “Joe Rogan Broke Up My Relationship,” it is clear that she is not in the business of playing it safe. Growing up in a working class suburb, she spent much of her childhood and adolescence doing just that. Now in her thirties and working toward the creative life of her dreams, she has spent the last few years unlearning aspects of her upbringing that no longer serve her while simultaneously discovering what truly feels important to her own beliefs. All of this is reflected in her current writings which have become heavier, edgier, and bolder than the last. Her upcoming debut album “Daddy Issues” contains elements of grunge, rock and roll, and punk. At the end of the day, though, Cara will always be a vocalist’s vocalist — and she continues to feature her soothing, soulful, and powerful voice at the forefront of the latest soundscapes.

In her eight year music career so far, Cara has performed for audiences across North America. From Vancouver to Nashville, she has shared the stage with such artists as Dashboard Confessional, The Elwins, MAUVEY, and Juno-Award winners Dizzy. In 2019, Cara was hand-picked and showcased as one of Canadian Music Week’s Emerging Artists. Following the pandemic pause, she continued to be a featured artist at such festivals as the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Tiny Lights, and Khatsahlano.

Cara’s newest single “Time to be a Bitch” comes out January 19. In an attempt to properly categorize it — is R&B Grunge a genre? This song might be the first of its kind.
