Cari Cari

Zugegeben: Wir haben eine Schwäche für österreichische Bands, die zwar internationale Erfolge verbuchen können, aber hier so unbekannt sind wie die fünfzigste Stelle von pi (0, übrigens). Lieber als euch von mathematischem Nonsense zu erzählen, erzählen wir euch von Cari Cari, dem Jungen und dem Mädchen, die es mit Didgeridoo und Maultrommel schaffen, an The xx plus The Kills zu erinnern.

Das österreichische Duo hat sich bei einer CD–Release Party von Alexanders Band The Golden Rabbit kennen gelernt, bei der Stephanie Support–Act war. Kurz darauf trennten sich wie in jedem guten Film ihre Wege. Stephanie ging für ein halbes Jahr nach Australien. Zurück kam sie mit Maultrommel und Didgeridoo. Mit diesen Instrumenten und Down Under–Bräune richteten sich die beiden ein kleines Studio in einem Haus am See ein und schrieben einen Sommer lang Lieder. Sie erscheinen heute auf der EP mit dem, hmm, ungewöhnlichen Namen “AMERIPPINDUNKLER“. Warum die EP so heißt, wollen die Beiden allerdings nicht verraten, aber vielleicht kommt ihr ja drauf, wer weiß.
Alexander lebt derzeit in Madrid, Stephanie in Österreich . Auch sonst ist die mystische Band recht international. Sie werden beispielsweise auf indonesischen, norwegischen oder chilenischen Blogs gefeatured und haben zwei Songs zum Soundrack des brasilianischen Surf–Films Winter von Gabriel Novis beigetragen. Warum sie hierzulande nicht auf dieselbe Resonz stoßen, ist nicht wirklich erklärbar. Natürlich wäre es für Cari Cari schön, wenn man auch in Österreich auf sie aufmerksam würde. Aber das kann ja noch werden. Schließlich ist Österreich zwar ein sehr gemütliches Land, ein El Dorado der Slow Motion quasi, aber taub ist es nicht. Weil sie das Tempo dieses Landes kennen, haben sie ihre Ziele ohnehin höher gesteckt. Zum Beispiel in Amerika. Unseren Segen haben sie. Mit der nächsten EP haben sie übrigens auch schon angefangen und für kommenden Sommer ist eine Tour durch Australien geplant. Cari Cari haben aber nicht nur ein Faible für den fünften Kontinent (gibt es dafür eigentlich noch ein anderes Synonym?), sondern auch für Tarantino. Ihm haben sie sogar den Song “Dear Mr. Tarantino“ gewidmet. Warum? “Wir sind Fans. Unsere Musik ist stark von seinen Filmen und deren Stimmung geprägt. Vielleicht kommt auch bald mal ein Mr. Morricone.“ Ansonsten geben sich die Beiden gerne geheimnisvoll und distanziert. Würde man die Band daten, würde sie also alles richtig machen.

Austrian duo Cari Cari are quite the talented twosome. Comprised of multi-tasking musicians Stephanie Widmer (vocals, didgeridoo, jaw harp, drums) and Alexander Köck (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), previously of indie-electro band The Golden Rabbit, the pair make bluesy electronic goodness with a kick.

Likened to the love-child of The Kills and The xx, everything from the dirty blues bass, sensual opening harmonies, scuzzy riffs, and vocal wails makes "White Line Fever" scream "killer track."

Cari Cari is a two-piece Austrian band and "White Line Fever" is their debut single. The track displays a surprisingly straight-to-the-point determination for a new act. Though both Stephanie Widmer and Alexander Köck have worked on previous projects, they have obviously found their true comfort zone in this rather raw, uncultivated sound, influenced by blues-rock and mellow post-punk. Based on "White Line Fever" I have all the reasons to look forward to their weirdly titled EP AMERIPPINDUNKLER which is to be released later this year. - Stereofox - Iva

Das Duo aus Wien klingt wie eine rasante Motorfahrt durch die britische Indie-Szene.

Anschnallen, Bikerjacke anziehen, macht euch auf eine Sightseeingtour der anderen Art bereit. Die beiden Musiker nehmen einen mit ihrem coolen amerikanischen Schlitten mit auf einen Trip durch Soho, Camden und andere Szene-Viertel Londons. So in etwa muss man sich die Musik von Cari Cari vorstellen. Die zwei, die nebenbei noch als Singer/Songwriter beziehungsweise als Teil der Electro-Band The Golden Rabbit tätig.

Mit ihrer Single „White Line Fever“ liefern sie uns nun eine rockige Blues-Rock Nummer, die aber zeitgleich von einer Eleganz geprägt, die sonst nur Bands wie The XX draufhaben. Die Single bietet einen kleinen Vorgeschmack auf die EP, die noch folgen wird. Sie trägt den vielsagenden Namen „AMERIPPINDUNKLER“ und wird voraussichtlich 6 Titel haben.

I always take band’s own descriptions with a pinch of salt, opting to let the music do the talking. “A mix which sounds as if Keith Richards received a computer in the 60s” is how Alexander Köck (The Golden Rabbit) and Stephanie Widmer aka Cari Cari describe their debut song. While this does sound appealing, comparing your music to anything done by Keith Richards is very brave.

Thankfully the first tune from their debut EP „AMERIPPINDUNKLER“ turns out to be a little gem in own right. It’s simplicity gets under your skin as the blues elements take control of your senses and the vocals of both artists compliment each other perfectly.

They may have quite a way to go before they can really compare themselves to “Keef”, but if this debut is anything to go by then their EP is definitely going to be one to look out for in 2014. - Substanceismeaningless

This song has every element of sound and structure that I prefer. It has blues, electronic, old country, vintage rock and synthetic sound with sultry voices and different pitches that harmonize well. How many bands use a Didgeridoo and a Jaw Harp? White Line Fever is never incredibly exciting, but it does build you up at the 3 minute mark. At 2:30-3:00 minutes we hear a lot more power in Stephanie Widmers voice, exposing her varying vocal range. Alexander Köck is more average in his musical talents, but still a great puzzle piece to this duo. Who are they? Two songs, and this is all I have to offer, but both are impeccable. Look up “No War” on SoundCloud. Does no less than impress. My only criticism? Ditch the Face paint in the White Line Fever video. Its different, we get it, but its hard to take someone seriously who is clearly lacking in tribal heritage. Tell me, when listening to Kiss, did you ever think their make-up was cool? Its a statement, yes but theirs is an original one. Gotye, Walk The Moon, Wild Nothing, & Tune-Yards are just a few of the types of bands associated with “face-painting for no reason”. If you want to be taken seriously, dare to be different, but do it on your own. - Bangorang
