"Seen: Carita Boronska at the Auditorium"

Swedish jazz singer Carita Boronska performed with her quintet on May 3 at the Auditorio de Tenerife. I had already heard her music through her myspace page "yes, every artist has one nowadays!", and got in touch with her to ask her for an interview in Puerto de la Cruz, where we sat for hours having more of a conversation than an interview, and then I went to see the concert on Saturday.

"Carita's singing is sweet and childlike at times, and then she would change and inject such power into it, it left us all breathless! Her improvisations were especially brilliant, especially watching her play the piano and sing; the atmosphere was one of complete intimacy, as if she was singing for each person individually"

"And I must mention her wonderful musicians; Gladston Galliza, such a gifted guitarist who wowed us all with his fantastic solos, singing and playing impossible improvisations and not missing a note, Ariel Bringuez, a young Cuban saxophonist who is so sophisticated for his age when he plays; Antonio Miguel, an amazing bassist and Noah Shaye on drums, whose last solo was one of the best I've ever heard"

Carita actually spent a few months living in Tenerife between 1996 and 1997, about six months after graduating from the Berklee College of Music "Boston, USA". She had her own band, the Carita Boronska Band, with whom she performed at two of the Heineken Jazz Festivals. A natural composer, she realised that after Berklee she needed some time to readjust and get back into the flow of composing again. It was in Tenerife that she wrote one of the songs that features in her "Jazzuality" CD, "Crazy World". She had the luxury of having the Ort í brothers playing in this band.

She left Tenerife for Madrid where she lived for the next ten years, combining her singing with her job as singing teacher for the Creative Music School of Madrid. She made her album "Jazzuality" at the prestigious Musigrama studios in Madrid; the producer Paco Ortega fell in love with her project and decided to collaborate with her. The album consists of Carita's own compositions, as well as a fabulous version of "Come Together" by The Beatles amongst other covers of jazz standards.

She moved to Paris in November 2007, to give birth to her daughter Liv.

The concert was a very emotional one for many reasons, one because Carita's long time friend and pianist, Pepe Torres had died this January, and it was her first concert this year without him.

Carita shared all the songs of her CD except "My Funny Valentine", which she used to sing with him as a duet, saying it would probably take a very long time to be able to sing this song again, if ever.

After the concert people were lining up to buy her disc.
