Carla Bean

Carla Bean

 Los Angeles, California, USA
BandPopAlternative

A Powerful singer/Keyboardist. Fresh and current, but inspired by a time when pop music was full of arrangement, melody, and changes, that took your ears on a journey. Quirky, haunting keys and sultry vocals, playing tightly with strong bass and drum groves, layered with unique instruments and pads.

Biography

11/01/12: Debut Album "Mess of Things" 1st Round Nominee for the next 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards in Several Major Categories

If you HAD to compare Carla Bean to any other Artist...

Take some theatrical vocal harmonies from Queen and Abba; Eccentric synths and grooves from David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and Depeche mode; Sultry and Powerful Vocals from Annie Lennox, Fiona Apple, Lauryn Hill, Sara Bareilles, and Bjork; Intelligent and complex composition and keyboard playing, from Stevie Wonder; And a sarcastic, humorous personality from Tom Waits... Then you would have maybe one of Carla Bean's songs. You'll Have to come up with your own recipes for the rest.

Whatever the song; the production and arrangement is clean pristine and competitive. And Her live performance is tight, energetic, funky, and it downright rocks.

Ms. Bean was born in a tiny tiny town, just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This town contained a Gothic cathedral, a Medieval castle, a few European mansions, and a whole mess of forest and meadows. Carla Bean believes her imagination was allowed to thrive because of her unique up-bringing. The childhood hallucinations and night terrors probably didn't hurt either. If you listen to her music, you'll know, that whimsy and quirk are always essential ingredients.

Her mother, a creative writer and poet, and her father, a musician and visual artist, infused Bean with the bug for all things musical, artistic, and creative. She started playing her father's various pianos, organs, Wurlitzer, accordions; and singing at the top of her lungs when she was supposed to be excited about dolls and Disney World. She was drawing twisted creatures in school, when she was supposed to be taking quizzes. Carla Bean got a disturbing amount of mileage out of the sticks and rocks that the woods provided her.

After years of being an essential ingredient in other bands, such as Fresh Cut Salads, Carla Bean teamed up with Producer and extraordinary musician, Rubin Edwards to take her own music to the next level. She has just released her first solo song and video “Magic Box” to lure unsuspecting folk into her Pied Piper sound-trail, so that we may all be in one place when she drops her album of saucy songs on our asses in August of 2012!

Where has her band played?
With The Fresh Cut Salads, she played at nearly every venue in Philly and Surrounding, including;
World Cafe Live(PHL),
Johnny Brenda's(PHL),
and Pianos(NY)
As "Carla Bean":
Tin angle (PHL)
North Star Bar (PHL)
The Fire (PHL)
The Nail (Ardmore)
Milkboy (Bryn Mawr, Main stage)
John and Peters (New Hope)
ETC, and a million places you've never heard of...

Magic Box

Magic Box by Carla Bean

Talking more means thinking less…
So shut your mouth and listen to your brain a sec.
Never hurts to contemplate…
A clever thought might even show up if you wait.

But Thinking is exhausting ain't it, so I'll spell it out for you:
Those shoes can't help you lose that weight, ain't no shampoo can get you laid.

Turn your life off, and put you brain on standby
Magic box will protect you from that blue sky.

Lazy sure beats doing… stuff,
I know even pushing buttons can be tough.
If you could do it with your will,
You'd wish someone else would do it for you still.

Well here's one Magic Box won't tell you,
So let me clue you in;
Zero trans-fat" don't mean, "fat free"
And Dr. Phil can't make you happy.

Turn your life off, and put your brain on standby,
Magic Box will protect you from that blue sky.
Turn your life off, and put your brain on standby,
Magic Box will protect you from that Sunshine.

Better use it, or you'll lose it, then what you gonna do?
When somehow Magic Box goes bye-bye,
And you get stuck with you and your life.

Turn your life off, and put your brain on standby,
Magic Box will protect you from that blue sky.
Turn your life off, and put your brain on standby,
Magic Box will protect you from that Sunshine

Turn your life off, and put your brain on standby,
Magic Box will protect you from that blue sky.
Turn your life off, and put your brain on standby,
Magic Box will protect you from that Sunshine

Another Day In My Head

Written By: Carla Bean

Foggy glass making my finger dance.
Drawing shapes, watching the trees go by.
...Told myself, "I’m not going in today,"
Why can’t I do what I say?

Just another chance, a chance I’m not taking,
Guess you could say, I’m playing dead.
Living in a shell of my own making,
Just another day in my head.

Big surprise, I slept though my stop again,
Maybe this time I won’t turn around.

Just another chance, a chance I’m not taking,
Guess you could say, I’m playing dead
Living in a shell of my own making,
Just another day in my head.

In the distance, just beyond my reach,
The city lights are calling out to me.
Right in front of me, is this foggy glass,
Guess I must be in my head again.

Just another chance, a chance I’m not taking,
Guess you could say, I’m playing dead
Living in a shell of my own making,
Just another day in my head.

A Mess of Things

Written By: Carla Bean

When I heard what was goin’ down, I washed my hands,
I told you that you had reached a new low.
And now it’s not turning out quite like you planned,
There’s really no use in my saying “I told you so...”

Not feeling sorry for you somehow
You’ve gone and made a mess of things now.

You put your sticky fingers where they did not belong,
You really didn’t think it though, now you’ll pay,
And don’t try to clean it up…admit you were wrong.
You knew you were overdrawn, but you wrote the check anyway.

You ruined everything, take a bow.
You’ve gone and made a mess of things now,
Yes, you done made a mess of things now.

Trouble is, boy, you don’t listen. You’re so hell-bent on
your mission
How did you get so clever? Believe me, you’ll never live
this down.

You choose your words carefully and tell those white lies.
I know you’ve heard “goes around, comes around”
You turned into the person you claim to despise.
Well did you expect me to take it all sitting down.

Boy, you done made a mess of things now
Not feeling sorry for you some how
Yes you done made a mess of things now…

Unfamiliar Walls

Written By: Carla Bean

Wish I could keep you underneath,
I'd be sure to poke some holes, so you can breath.
They’re nice; they let the light in here,
they move across the floor and disappear.

Just settle down…and don’t complain
You’ll get your water when it rains.

And I’ll clean up. No, don’t bother.
Go to sleep, I’ll make the calls
Don’t be afraid when you awake to
Unfamiliar walls.

I hear the pretty lights go by,
They spin around. It makes me feel like Christmas inside.
And every time I hear the sirens sing, I think I hear them say your name,
For what it’s worth, I’m glad you stayed.
Seems like a waste to walk outside
because we found the perfect place to hide.

And I’ll clean up. No, don’t bother.
Go to sleep, I’ll make the calls
Don’t be afraid when you awake to
Unfamiliar walls.

I wonder if they'd notice we're gone,
Everyone would say a prayer and light a candle
How could it be wrong?

And I’ll clean up. No, don’t bother.
Go to sleep, I’ll make the calls
Don’t be afraid when you awake to
Unfamiliar walls.
