Carla Magna

Carla Magna is Toronto's own lyrical ambassador. With her creative and political voice she transcends cultural barriers. Also known as the UN's rapstress, she's leading the renaissance of 21st century Hip Hop, which is alive and well! Her ability to translate world experience to all echelons of society is second to none. One of her mentors, MC Lyte recently stated: "CARLA MAGNA has what it takes to hang with the conscious MCs. She brings knowledge and flavour to a game that definitely is in need of a face lift."

Carla Magna is currently featured on Def Jam's DJ DMA & Shadyville's DJ Domination's "Coast 2 Coast Mixtape Vol. 14: Shadyville Edition" and also appears on "Public Muse Song collection Midem 2008". Her first single, "You don't know me" produced by Toronto's own Pcappz , a talent who has worked for majors like Paul Wall, was digitally released this year. Currently, she is creating with T.O. producers Sean Savage, Richkidd and Kingdrum, and international producer Jusbus. After having performed at the Stop the Violence rally in Mel Lastman's Square this fall, she is eagerly preparing for future performances, the filming of her first concept video and the release of "Something about her".

As a young mulatto girl growing up in a multicultural environment, she came to appreciate the beauty and power of diversity. Her immediate family members are musicians of various genres from R&B to Reggae. Amazingly, she could have published a poetry anthology by her 8th birthday. By 12, she had won several public speaking and performance awards and was heavily involved in environmental campaigns and political activism. As a teenager, her extensive world travels inspired her to pen song and poetry in foreign languages as well.

Carla made her on-stage debut in 1999 alongside Citizen Kane, one of Toronto's most well known acts. This performance took place during the touring and filming of the "Rapumentary: the Raising of Kane" by Alison Duke for the National Canadian Film Institute. After her first solo performance at Phemphat's Honey Jam in 2000, she took the stage at several Toronto venues and began MCing her own urban university radio show alongside DJ Wikked. Her urge to be heard was heightened along with her drive to help youth find their own voice. Carla continued traveling throughout university which fostered her linguistic mastery and upon completion began teaching locally and abroad. She worked with the Read2Rap program as the Creative Director and she also taught in Africa where she gained a new perspective with which to express herself lyrically. In 2005, Carla Magna began writing for other upcoming artists such as Cali, produced by Kuya.

Carla Magna is Hip Hop's modern day gypsy who is spearheading a new generation of music that makes lyrical substance appealing to a borderless society. Of equal importance, she brings something to the game that is sorely lacking: CLASS! Carla Magna stays true to the motto of Living itself is an art form and in doing so, writes to share, to improve and to inspire. MC Lyte concludes: "It's refreshing to hear her cleverness but above all her love for music and Hip Hop are undeniable!" She takes you with her, no questions asked, so you too can experience the sweat and tears called life!
