Carl's high-energy contemporary style is similar to Van Halen's, with an aggressive attitude that separates him from the pack. He utilizes a full array of contemporary techniques including speed picking, arpeggios, and pinched harmonics. His wide vibrato, whammy-bar licks, and natural phrasing are impressive.
Carl started playing guitar when he was eight, but he didn't take the instrument seriously until three years later. When he was 14, Carl witnessed a rock concert by Van Halen and Talas, which inspired him to work harder at playing and practicing. Today, Carl teaches at the Atlanta Institute of Music and is a clinician for Ovation. He has authored two method books with accompanying cassettes for Alfred Publishing. Carl has also transcribed material from Joe Satriani, Vinnie Moore, and Metallica for Cherry Lane Music. The Carl Culpepper Band has been a staple in the North Georgia rock scene for over a decade. Performing at venues such as Smith's Olde Bar, Darwins, Club 29, Ugly Mug Pub and many others the CCB brings the audience to it's feet with it's electric mix of original material and cover tunes from many Blues and Rock greats.
From the age of 8 while growing up in Central Georgia, Carl has had a rich and multi-faceted musical career. In addition to a stint as contributing editor for Guitar World Magazine, Carl has authored many instructional publications, performed in several teaching videos and recorded on projects alongside guitarist Mike Stern and drummer Dave Weckl. Carl is also a long-standing faculty member at the Atlanta Institute of Music, where he teaches the Music Apprecation, Ear Training and Rock Guitar programs. Carl has been featured on several CDs including "Radiant" by Randy Hoexter and "Demonstratus" by Thom Hartwick. Additionally, Carl can be heard on the sports theme for the Florida Sunshine Network. Carl's debut album "Amplitude" was released in 2005 to rave national reviews and a second CD is currently in the works.
