FIFTY! It Doesn’t Look This Good on Everybody

(Winner of The Actors Repertory’s 2nd Annual Solo Show Festival)

FIFTY! It Doesn’t Look This Good On Everybody is Carlease’s celebration of diversity, tolerance and acceptance. Then her mother shows up.

(11 November, 2010-Los Angeles, CA) – It was only a matter of time before the reality craze made its way to the stage. It makes sense, after all: since theatre is a live medium, “reality” is an inherent element of it. But actress Carlease Burke goes a step further in her self-created solo show by incorporating the audience as part of the performance—and never reacting to them as viewers. Instead, they become guests at her half-century birthday party actively participating from the very beginning in FIFTY! It Doesn’t Look This Good on Everybody, directed by David Jahn and produced by Bits ‘N Pieces Productions. Following a successful four week run at The Actor’s Group theatre, FIFTY! is now available for bookings in theatre festivals, women’s organizations and diversity groups both domestic and internationally.

Mary Mallory of the Tolucan Times states, "Burke creates memorable characters through fine writing and touching acting. Employing body movement, dialect and facial expressions, [she] vividly creates such diverse characters as the pontificating minister, strong friend named Jamaica, teasing grandmother and tough mother. Carlease brings energetic rhythm and timing this lighthearted yet thought provoking piece".

“Poignant, observant and just plain fun!!” ~ Chas L. Johnson,

Executive Producer, NCIS

“Carlease’s talent allowed her to embody a number of different characters, and each was so believable and on the mark, that it was easy to forget that Carlease was alone on the stage. Some of the characters were so vibrant and true to life, that I could hear other audience members commenting about how their family members were remarkably similar to the ones on stage.”

"“Fifty!” Celebrates Wisdom"

An entertaining and enlightening look at reaching one of life’s major milestones, “Fifty! It Doesn’t Look This Good On Everybody” is a strong one woman show by Carlease Burke. Part confessional, part celebration, the production puts a new twist on solo performance by inviting audience participation.
Taking as its jumping-off point a surprise birthday party for Burke, the presentation examines what it means to fit in, what is family and how we connect these two. It reveals that sometimes the greatest gifts come through the most traumatic situations, bringing hard-won wisdom, maturity and strength.
The show starts with Burke’s long-lost friend, Jamaica, surprising her with a birthday party featuring family and friends. As they catch up, Burke reveals frustrations, disappointments and triumphs as she celebrates where she is in life. Audience members become guests too, drawn into the action and plot in response to questions and situations.
Burke creates memorable characters through fine writing and touching acting. Emotional highlights are revealed tangentially in response to friendly conversation. Humorous, thoughtful and heartfelt, the dialogue and situations ring true. Employing body movement, dialect and facial expressions, Burke vividly creates such diverse characters as the pontificating minister, strong Jamaica, teasing grandmother and tough mother. She brings energetic rhythm and timing to the piece as well.
