CARLOS "GOGO" GOMEZ
New Paradigm Global Music
(Kidlat Records)
On “New Paradigm Global Music”, Tri-State-based, world-renowned percussionist Carlos” GoGo” Gomez takes us on an exploratory musical journey into a world of trance induction through rhythms. The veteran master drummer/martial artist/Yoruba priest and Oba-Anyan (keeper of the sacred drum knowledge) fuses acoustic Latin and world percussions with electronica loops and sequences, creating a mystical funky and spiritual soundtrack for a new global generation. With Gomez laying down all the rhythmic beats and percussive acrobats (which are many), David Ambrosio anchors all the scores on the bass while Lou Perez’s guitar brings a melodic flavor to the mix. Keyboardist Eric Kupper joins the power trio on three of the selections, adding another dimension and more musical layers to this abundant galaxy of sounds, grooves and beats. Gomez’s quest into the realm of shamanic dance (or trance dance) is indeed a success. His hypnotic syncopated global beats, cosmic mantras, and spiritual ambiance in motion are an incubator for inner exploration and the full manifestation of joy. Musically, Gomez’s percussion work is outstanding and exquisite. A stunning timbal solo stands out in the selection “Zen Dance”, as well as his use of Middle Eastern drums, rain-sticks, and Brazilian percussions throughout this recording. Other favorites include “Sanctuary of the Pink Diamond”, and “Aremu Odudua”. —Rudy Mangual - Latin Beat Magazine (lbmo.com)

“…this is a relatively focused collection. It provides enough interesting musical ideas and beats to sound fresh, but knows how to find a good groove and stick with it. It ranges from mood music that would be good for yoga or massage ("Water Dragon" and "Metu Neter") to Kimpton Hotels lobby music ("Aremu Odudua") to late-night club music ("Sanctuary of the Pink Diamond") in an assured and confident manner.”

Carlos GoGo Gomez
“New Paradigm Global Music”

Pulse. Beat. Rhythm. Vibration. Can music open pathways to multidimensional awareness, causing listeners to transcend perceived boundaries of time, space, language and cognition; and thereby enter into altered states of consciousness? Will new understandings of Oneness change the way we live: our relationship to one another, the planet and the cosmos and can it bring about a new paradigm? New Paradigm Global Music explores these questions. It is an experiment into the realm of shamanic or trance dance. If you are interested in Self-Cultivation, Yoga, Qi Gong or Ecstatic/Trance Dance, then this is a must have album!!! Psychedelic 21st century Style!!!

Eloquent drones, mantric transcendental vocalizations, combined with electronic beats — punctuated by Gomez’s evocative and passionate percussion — reveal this newfound place of unity. An omnivorous musician at his best, Gomez who has played with Eartha Kitt, Tito Puente, Maxwell, Sade, and Mariah Carey, to name just a few, has dug deep into his Afro-Latin heritage and yet this album reflects a new understanding, a new sense of unity and resonance after an amazing career and very full life. The resulting album traces an expanding spiral from slow and contained, to energetic and ecstatic, and finally to transcendent. “It’s an invitation to go inside” Gomez notes. “But this journey is not passive background music; its hypnotic quality is meant to spark movement and meaningful connection to the body…leading to internalization, to a transformative state of ecstasy and bliss.”

"CARLOS GO GO GOMEZ: New Paradigm Global Music – Music Review 3-21-11"

By Ralph White – If you’re looking for the quintessential studio musician or an on-stage sideman then call Carlos Go Go Gomez. His resume reads like a Who’s – Who of contemporary music. It includes everyone from Eartha Kitt to Mariah Carey to Gipsy Kings to Sade and on and on and on… Even before popping his CD into my player I was already impressed. Then once “New Paradigm Global Music” (Kidlat Records) began to play I became a fan.
From the opening track, “Water Dragon” all the way through to the closing cut, “Fearless Interdimensional Travelling” it was apparent that what Carlos had recorded was more than just music – it was a vision. In fact, Gomez had succeeded at what many in the past had attempted and that was making the literal connection between spirituality and music.
Percussionist, composer, musical director, educator, spiritualist, martial arts master, ethnomusicologist are just some of the hats Mr. Gomez wears. World music, jazz, electronica, dance, pop, rock, new age, funk and R&B are a few of the many genres that he mixes. This man has been around the world and back in more ways than one.
Particularly interesting about “New Paradigm Global Music” is that it’s sequenced with the intention of recreating a meditative, or trance-like state. The aforementioned first track begins as a soothing, down tempo instrumental with a marvelous marriage of relaxing synthesizer generated waveforms such as didgeridoos, harps, sitars and flowing water sounds wed with the groove of Carlos’ percussion instruments.
“Law of Attraction” (my personal favorite) is the only song of the 8 on this release that has vocals, or more accurately, spoken word. Its hypnotic quality lulls the listener into a sedate state of consciousness I’ve only occasionally experienced on my own while in Yoga class.
Each track thereafter seems to intensify in tempo and energy that climaxes on the penultimate title, “Sarayeye”. Cleverly enough, the record ends with “Fearless Interdimensional Travelling” that simulates a post-coital state of release and rapture that satisfies both body and mind.
To summarize, “New Paradigm Global Music” is a collection of ear candy and seductive, sexy sounds. So if anyone wants to know, “Who’s your daddy”, you tell’em – it’s Mr. Carlos Go Go Gomez. He’s the man!

Album Review: Carlos “Go Go” Gomez – New Paradigm Global Music
Artist: Carlos “Go Go” Gomez Title: New Paradigm Global Music Label: Kidlat Records
Reviewed by: Daniel Crotty

Carlos “Go Go” Gomez is a world-renowned percussionist. He is an extremely accomplished musician, who seeks to break the boundaries of conventional music. This can be clearly heard in his new album “New Paradigm Global Music”.

“Water Dragon” the first track on the album begins with the sounds of rushing water, synthesized sounds, and various percussion instruments. As the song progresses different tracks are layered on, which gives the appearance that there are multiple musicians. The synthesizer strings have a very relaxing affect, which goes well with the syncopated bongos, congas, and cymbals. The blending of electronic and acoustic instruments creates a very soothing rhythm, similar to those of a white noise machine.

“Law of Attraction” sticks out from the rest of the tunes, as it’s the only song with vocals. The music itself has a very calming sense, while the spoken word lyrics give you a deeper sense of meaning. This piece of music makes you think about the inner workings of the universe as we use it. It seems to lead you into a meditative state.

The tracks “Zen Dance” and “Aremu Odudua” both have bass heavy rhythms, with infectious percussive beats. They contain less electronic grooves, which gives them a more natural sound. “Metu Neter” which means the “Words of God” in Egyptian is also quite similar to these songs, containing more acoustic grooves than electric for the most part. The track also introduces a Gregorian chant, which changes in dynamic throughout and has a very ominous melody.

“Sanctuary of the Pink Diamond” and “Saraeye” are high-energy tunes with a unique mix of electronic and acoustic rhythmic patterns. They contain a myriad of synthesized sounds, which all blend in well with the oddly syncopated live acoustic percussion.

The final track on the album is “Fearless Interdimensional Travel”, which has a sonic conscienness similar to that of “Law of Attraction”. It puts you into a trance-like state. Between its sparse percussion and nature-like electronic sounds, it hypnotizes and settles the mind.

"“Metaphysical Latin Beats…Carlos Gomez explores the wonders of electronica and percussion in New Paradigm Global Music." 01/26/11"

Carlos Gomez explores the wonders of electronica and percussion in
New Paradigm Global Music. The colorful psychedelic cover of the album gives you a good idea of the wonders contained in the CD. Gomez easily manages to lead the listener from hypnotic electronic ambiance to lounge and trance-like moods in a mesmerizing confluence of electronic drones, spoken word meditation and fiery acoustic percussion.

Carlos “Go Go” Gomez is a master musician, priest, and martial artist. “One of the reasons for creating this music was to integrate the various parts of my life into one,” Gomez explains. “I wanted to break down those barriers that exist between being a priest here and a musician there and a martial artist over there.”

Gomez was raised in the Bronx (New York City) and grew up playing drums at a very young age. He was fascinated by both the Santeria saints and orishas of his Cuban mother and the Latin rock of Carlos Santana, Gomez became a professional musician and yogi in his teens. He founded the group Seguida with close friends. Seguida expanded into soul, funk, and disco territory.

His hard work as a percussionist affected his health and nearly cost him his life. When doctors gave up on him, he found an Akan (West African) priest in Queens (New york), who helped him heal through herbs and prayer. This series of events had an essential effect in his life. He traveled to Nigeria and became an Ifa priest himself. Currently, he practices physical disciplines such as jeet kune do (hybrid martial arts system and life philosophy founded by Bruce Lee), tae kwon do (Korean martial art), and yoga, and spiritual ones, such as reading and studying intensively about theosophy, the Kabbalah, and practicing meditation, Taoism, and Inner Alchemy.

Carlos GoGo Gomez
The pieces include an old santeria melody called “Aremu Odudua,” and a mantra titled “Metu Neter,” that combines layers of sounds from different philosophies and faiths. “If you listen carefully, there are three levels,” Gomez explains. “The classic OM is divided into five different sounds, as it was taught to me at the Satchidananda Center in New York almost forty years ago. The second layer is a Taoist mantra, and finally the third is an Arabic chant reminiscent of the call to prayer. This was designed to represent the essential unity of all religions, that they are all part of the Universal Truth.”

“On ‘Metu Neter,’ I was trying to constantly change my conga playing in a subtle way; it’s a metaphysical part of the song,” Gomez reflects. “Pop music requires absolute precise repetition, and before digital recording, I had to do it physically. That’s how I got on so many records. But I’m breaking that mold, and instead, I’m trying to create constant subtle change so that you barely even notice it, much like life.”

“I love movement, and that’s why I did yoga and martial arts. But many people think dance and movement is just about seduction and sex,” muses Gomez. “Yet there’s also dancing for your own personal joy and for your spirit. Dancing can lead to internalization, to a transformative state of ecstasy and bliss.”

New Paradigm Global Music is a portrait of Gomez’s inner self. “It’s an invitation to go inside, for listeners to reach the same state I found that day,” Gomez notes.

"A Laws of Attraction seminar turns a sought after Latin percussionist into a new ager... 1/22/2011"

A Laws of Attraction seminar turns a sought after Latin percussionist into a new ager that makes something that could easily fit into New Earth's release schedule? I thought that was just girl fiend stuff. Toning down the funk to an appropriate level, this is a new stage new wave set that let's you funk easy as you send your thoughts somewhere positive. As a politician would say, "it's the rhythm, stupid" that sets this apart from typical new age. Perhaps this is the jumping in point genre skeptics have been waiting for?

Bio

Percussionist, composer and educator - Carlos “Go Go” Gomez, has performed and recorded with a variable list of the biggest recording artists of our time. Throughout his career he has played and recorded along side contemporary mega stars Madonna, Quincy Jones, Mariah Carey, Sade and Francois K, as well as luminaries such as Tito Puente, Pharaoh Sanders, Eartha Kitt, Arturo Sandoval, Gypsy Kings, Jose Feliciano and Grupo Afro-Cuba de Matanzas. Gomez’s virtuosity is heard in the sheer range of his rhythmic influences and musical styles that he plays, rom Afro-Cuban bata, jazz and rock and roll, to Persian pop, Nigerian high life, New World Music and New Age electronica - Gomez’s hallmark is diversity and experimentation.

Carlos’ newest ventures continue his experimentation with new technologies. After recording a series of dance remixes with Francois K of Wave Music, David Morales of Def Music records and Jay Denes of Naked Music, Gomez launched his independent label, Kidlat Records. In 2005, he released his first CD, Homenaje al Asmatico, an homage to his bata teacher and mentor. In 2011, Carlos released his new CD, New Paradigm Global Music, a musical venture into the realm of shamanic or trance dance, encompassing his interest in Self-Cultivation, Yoga, Qi Gong and Martial Arts. New Paradigm Global Music reached #1 in the CMJ New World Music charts shortly after its release. His group, CG3, is currently preparing for their video shoot and a U.S. tour. In addition, Carlos maintains a vigorous schedule of live performances and as a DJ, teaching privately, recording sessions/studio work, film scoring, and running his imprint label, Kidlat Records throughout the tri-state area.
