"Justin and Selena Aren't the Only Carly Rae Jepsen Fans"

Hey, Phoebe here. I’m ADDICTED to a song, I cannot stop listening to it. It makes me so happy. I need to share! It’s physically impossible to write this blog while playing the song so I had to turn it off for a sec.

Okay, it’s called “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen! I’m sure you’ve heard of it since we play it on our show. Also, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have been tweeting about it. Yesterday Justin even tweeted a video of his old swagger coach Ryan Good and Pretty Little Liar’s Ashley Benson dancing around in their private jet to it!

It’s my absolute favorite song right now. Every time it comes on in the studio, I’m up, flailing around like a kid without a care in the world. The day we premiered this video on NML I said, “I wish I was a pop star and I wish this was MY song!”

I am loving it. This song is now at the top of my list of “Positive Songs To Turn My Day Around!” Okay, unpause. - MuchMusic

"Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Love Carly Rae Jepsen"

It looks like Drew isn’t the only singing competition contestant Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez support! Carly Rae Jepsen, the third runner-up in the fifth season of ’Canadian Idol,’ just won the approval of the pair over Twitter.

Gomez snapped this shot of a grinning Bieber driving and wrote, “This smile is because of Carly Rae Jepsen.. We have not stopped listening your song girl!” That’s quite an endorsement — combined, Gomez and Bieber have 25 million followers!

It’s nice to see the cute couple happy after a tumultuous end to 2011. Gomez’s mom suffered a devastating miscarriage, while Bieber’s grandparents were injured in a car accident — and he still has Mariah Yeater in his highly-influential hair.

The song they love so much is ‘Call Me Maybe,’ the lead single off of Jepsen’s sophomore album ‘Curiosity,’ due to be released sometime this year. Following her 2007 ‘Canadian Idol’ elimination, Jepsen went on the ‘Canadian Idol Top 3' tour before recording her debut on album, ‘Tug of War,’ in 2008. Jepsen was nominated for two Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent to our Grammys) for Best New Artist and Songwriter of the Year in 2010 — but we somehow think this may be even more of an honor.

While Jepsen may have come in third place on ‘Canadian Idol,’ it’s pretty clear she’s winning the fame game now. Check out the video for ‘Call Me Maybe’ below and hear what all the buzz is about! - Popcrush

"Who's the New Girl Justin Bieber Keeps Tweeting About?"

When it comes to music, there's no doubt Justin Bieber has some serious talent and an ear for hit songs. If you've paid attention to his Twittier recently, you might have noticed that he's mentioned an up and coming Canadian artist, Carly Rae Jepsen, on more than one occassion.

Justin has been hyping up her new single "Call Me Maybe," saying it is the catchiest song he's ever heard!
An endorsement from Justin is a big deal and we're pretty sure we'll be hearing a lot more of Carly in the near future! Check out her video for "Call Me Maybe" below! - Buzznet

"Carly Rae Jepsen: Anything but Idle"

You don't often hear much from any of Canadian Idol winners after the confetti slowly
stops falling from the rafters. You hear even less from the runner ups and third place
finishers. Luckily Carly Rae Jepsen seems to be bucking the trend.

When the 5th season of Canadian Idol came to an end, Jepsen had many opportunities in front of her, she could have made some rash decisions. Instead she took her time. And now, two years after her Idol run, the BC native has her first independent CD, Tug of War and a slow-burning single that currently sits on the Top 20 lists across Canada.

Jepsen is currently on tour with fellow Canadian acts Mariana's Trench and Shiloh. At her
recent stop in Calgary, I got the chance to talk to Carly Rae while sitting in a dark
stairwell about life after Idol, traveling the country and why she threw up the first time
she heard her song on the radio.

Your first tour across Canada was with your Canadian Idol finalists. And now you are
touring with Mariana's Trench and Shiloh. How is this tour different?

You can't compare it to the first one, it's so night and day. It's a different ball game, I'm promoting my own music, I'm touring with a very successful band. I'm learning about
merchandise, about audiences, about what it takes to get from hotel to hotel with a sketchy GPS. It's a little more gruelling, it's not as cushey the Idol Tour. Some people regret being on Idol what are your thoughts? It was a great opportunity to meet everyone in Canada and get my name out there. But, it wasn't representing the type of music I planned on making. It was more playing covers and being on a tv show. But also I write songs and I kinda of have a style in mind. I loved Idol. But I don't want it to be the one thing I did in my life, I want it to be apart of my story. I don't deny it, I know a lot of people have a full on hate on for the show once they are kicked off, I don't feel that way. I feel like it would be silly to not recognize it as a great opportunity. I hope I can look back in a few years and know that I used it properly.

Creatively, were you happy not to win?

Yeah I felt that way. It was a blessing in disguise. I don't think I would have been very
happy doing cover songs. I enjoyed having more time to work on my music. Writing my
own music was a critical factor for me. That is why I'm with the manager I'm with. I knew
I wanted to put out something original.

Do you have many HOLY SHIT moments?

Everyday. I've been very blessed. I get to live my dream life. It's exciting because there are unexpected parts and there are some tough parts. But at the end of the day, you
weigh it out with the gain and the gain for this career is totally worth it.

What have been the biggest challenges?

The business side to it all. You can't really play dumb if you want to have longevity. You
need to start thinking about what your getting yourself into. I won't pretend I know more
than I do, I'm still learning. I'm proud that I've taken on learning everything from song
writers credits to merchandise. One of my idols is Jann Arden because she is such a
business woman. Half of this tour is also a learning process. I get to travel with some
great artists and I pick their brains about how they've done this because they really have
developed a loyal fan base from level 1.

Coincidentally, you are signed to the same label as Jann Arden.

Actually, I only have a promotion and distribution deal with Maple, I'm actually still
unsigned. Which is so rare nowadays.

WHAT?! But you have a hit single!

It is a decision I made right after Idol. After the show, Theresa Sokyrka (Canadian Idol 2
runner up) suggested that I talk about getting a promotional and distribution deal. Because this day in age with the record companies crashing, we weren't necessarily sure if signing would the smartest deal.

So how did Tug of War become such a hit?

I have two amazing managers and a great group of people who are guiding me. I do everything I can. Whether it's going to radio stations, doing the one on one thing or signing autographs things like Juno Fan Fest.

What's it like hearing your single on the Tug of War on the radio?

It's a thrill every time I hear it! The first time I heard it is was actually hilarious. I had just gone out with my friends and I tried gin martinis for the first time. We were heading
home and I got car sick at the same time that my song came on the radio. My friends
were howling, it was hilarious.

On this tour, you are doing show 6 nights a week. How do you keep up?

It's my favorite type of lifestyle. I love it, I don't ever want to stop. Yeah it's crazy because every day is a little different, but it's my idea of heaven. My worse case scenario is the 9-5, monotonous over and over. Waking up and already knowing what your day is
going to be. I love the spontaneity and the chaos of this lifestyle, I - Online Blog - April 2, 2009

"Carly Rae has 'Sunshine on her shoulders'"

Carly Rae Jepsen wants to show you who she really is.
After finishing third on Season 5 of Canadian Idol last fall, Jepsen has just released her brand new single "Sunshine on My Shoulders." The song is off her upcoming debut album, which she says is a perfect representation of who she is as an artist.
"It meant a lot to me to finally, after a year of being on Canadian Idol and singing covers for all of Canada, it's going to be really exciting to be like, 'This is what I really wanted to show you. My main thing is that I write and I kind of had a direction and I hope you like it,'" says Jepsen, whose musical influences range from Ella Fitzgerald to Feist.
"I think a lot of times when you have your first record it can go a lot of different ways and I'm just so proud of it. I feel like it's exactly what I want it to be ... I think every song on there is sincere, which was my main goal. I didn't want it to come across as trying to be anybody other than myself."
"Sunshine on My Shoulders" is currently being played on radio stations across the country. It is the only cover song on the album, with Jepsen either writing or co-writing the rest.
Jepsen chose to re-make the classic tune that John Denver took to the top of the charts in the early 70s because it's a song she's loved for a long time.
"It just happened that I was at this party and we were all kind of reminiscing about childhood songs and that came up that that was mine and I was like, 'Someone should redo that song' and I thought well, 'Why don't I redo that song?'" says Jepsen.
"I think it's just sort of a nice celebration of summer and it's also one of those songs, I think it's kind of got those lyrics like an old jazz song that can go deeper but if you want to it can just be really like a feel good, happy summer song as well."
After her run on Canadian Idol ended, Jepsen spent the remainder of 2007 on a Top 3 Idol tour with winner Brian Melo and runner-up Jaydee Bixby.
She has been keeping busy doing shows and recently signed a co-management deal with Simkin Artist Management and Dexter Entertainment. Her record will be distributed by Fontana/Maple Music.
Jepsen, who hails from Mission, BC, has just moved into a new apartment in Vancouver's coveted Kitsilano neighbourhood and plans to relax a bit before her album is released later this summer.
"I'm four blocks from the beach and I can't believe my setup. I'm quite happy about it."
Jepsen has no idea what kind of reaction to expect from the album.
"I think that's one of the big lessons you learn from Idol is all you can do is give them is what you have to offer and then you've just got to let it go and hope for the best."
She hopes it will also reach out to some new fans.
"That's always a goal I think with everything is just trying to constantly make your fan base grow and to reach out to new people who maybe haven't heard it before so yeah, that's definitely one of those things we all hope will happen." - Sheri Block, CTV.ca July 8, 2008

Bio

“I guess there’s a part of you that always wants to try something a little bit different than what you’ve done before,” says Carly Rae Jepsen.

That’s curiosity for you. It’s a good instinct to have. Without it, this Vancouver-based musician would never have left her Mission, B.C. hometown for the life of a singer-songwriter -- a career that’s so far produced an acclaimed debut album (2008’s Tug of War), a MuchMusic Video Award nomination, two gold-certified singles (“Bucket,” “Tug of War”) and -- to top it all -- two 2010 Juno Award nominations for Best New Artist and Songwriter of the Year.

She also wouldn’t have Curiosity. That’s her new record, a collection of heart-on-sleeve pop songs about, fittingly enough, life’s biggest curiosity -- love, and all the complications that come with it. Its sound -- a blend of confessional lyrics, sweet acoustic gems and straight-up pop -- is just as strangely fascinating, not least of all to Carly herself. How she stumbled upon one of its main inspirations is still something of a wonder.

She was doing what she does – writing music – when something truly curious sneaked up on her. That thing was a song called – what else? – “Curiosity.” Like much of her new album, it was crafted with long-time collaborator, writer/producer Ryan Stewart, and it’s about a girl (“or me,” she laughs) hung up on a bad boy, a guy she knows is no good, but she’ll never stop thinking about. The subject is a universal push-and-pull, one the singer-songwriter even tackled on “Tug of War” (a tune that went on to beat the likes of Nickelback to win the 2010 Canadian Radio Music Award for Song of the Year). But “Curiosity” came rushing out differently, with pop and snap and a bubblegum chorus harder to shake than the bad-boy she’s crowing about.

“I was singing it in the mic, to demo it out, with these guts that I didn’t know I had. And it was exciting. It was like a braver version of me that I never had experimented with before, at least not out loud to people,” she says.

Carly didn’t know what to do about the new song. It felt so natural. She thought about it constantly -- at home in Vancouver, while doing a promotional tour of Japan, and then back again. For eight months, she and Ryan wrestled with it. She wondered: “How would this fit on my record?”

Sure, she’s always spinning the likes of La Roux, Kimbra and Dragonette on her stereo, but this is a girl whose roots are in folk. As a little girl, her dad would sing her to sleep with James Taylor classics. As a fledgling musician she ran an acoustic night at a Vancouver cafe. Even during her 2007 run on Canadian Idol she was auditioning with her own material and covering Janis Ian. And then there were all the songs she’d promised herself she’d showcase on album No. 2 -- jangly and cozy folk-pop creations more Natalie Imbruglia than Kylie Minogue.

Those tunes are still there in force (just look to “Europe” or “Alice in Wonderland”). Still, Carly decided that when it came to “Curiosity,” it was love. Pop had just as much a place on her record as folk. Ryan was just as “stoked” about the song as she was -- and so, the real fun began.

The songs rushed out, a whole 35 of them written -- with most of the record made at Ryan’s Wine Cellar Studios in Vancouver, then mixed by Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Jakalope) at Mushroom Studios. And Carly’s friends and family were along for the whole process, the singer inviting them to listening sessions -- baiting them with new tunes and fresh popcorn -- so they could help her pick the sweetest of the bunch.

“Talk to Me” finds the 25-year-old getting her flirt on in a summer song clicking with handclaps. “Dear Julien” -- which brought Carly together with co-writer Kevin James Maher -- finds the singer in a more serious mood, writing a letter (and a song) to an ex. On the flip, “Just a Step Away” is, to Carly, the definition of a “beautiful old fashioned love song” -- a piece she adapted from a tune her father wrote for her step-mom on their wedding day. (“He cried and loved it and it was so sweet,” she says.)

“Both Sides Now,” Carly’s modern cover of the Joni Mitchell classic, bridges the styles she’s embraced on Curiosity. “It’s exactly the combination that I’m hoping is the theme of the album,” says the self-described “flower child of pop.” “I was definitely thinking Joni Mitchell meets dance,” she says of the album’s sonic palette with a giggle. “That’s exactly what I want this record to be.”

And then there’s lead single “Call Me Maybe,” the hit that pulses with the same jumpy energy as a new romance -- the very thing Carly’s singing about. It’s a track that reunited Carly with her “Sour Candy” duet partner, old friend and tour-mate Josh Ramsay of Marianas Trench.

“He was so stoked. He’d been trying to get me on the pop train for years,” she laughs. Since debuting in September, the single has been picked up by radio stations across the country. It start
