"Home and Native Sound Series"

Carmen Corcoz was definitely entertaining with her spunky, folksy tunes. Her backup singers flavoured her performance - reminiscent of motown, meeting 2011 funk/pop. Her song, 'Hide and seek' is a perfect example of that assimilation. Corcoz’s music and singing was energetic, and vibrant, colourful one can say, as she incorporated a medley of genres which worked very well, and resulted in an original theme and showcase.

She utilized jazz, blues, funk, and threw in a touch of glam rock that gave her a spirited and fiery performance. Singing from her debut album Inspired, Corcoz gave a fascinating performance that is sure to provoke many to get up and dance.

Carmen Corcoz's Magazine Questionaire

Q: How would you describe your music to people?

A: Every song has its own meaning; I try to make my music relatable, uplifting, and also very inspiring to the listener. I always trying to signify a deep meaning to every song of mine.

Q: Do you write your own songs?

A: Yes, I write all my songs and I’ve been writing since I was really young. My producer (MIDIJO) is always amazed at how fast I can come up with lyrics when working together. It’s something that I hold a lot of value for. As a music artist you will understand and appreciate the song you sing to people much more if you wrote it. In other cases, you’d have to really search the meaning of the song and tell the story in the way you think the writer actually meant it, and sometimes that can be a challenge in itself.

Q: What are your immediate music career goals?

A: Since I am an unsigned artist, my goal is to have my marketing up to par. I want to introduce my project “Inspired” to people and get them familiarized with me as a singer/song-writer and what my goal is all about. Building a fan-base is the most important, so that is definitely another one of my goals. I want to eventually be signed by a label and do this full-time and make it my career. It has never been just a goal to me, simply a wish and I have never stopped believing.

Q: How would you define the word “success”?

A: Success to me doesn’t mean money and fame. I believe anyone that is doing what they do best every single day, are the ones who are successful. I always encourage people to do what their heart desires, because it’s never too late. Sometimes it can be a journey finding out who you are and what you were meant to do. I woke up one day realizing life is too short and became so determined to succeed and make my dreams come to reality.

Q. How was shooting your first Music Video?

A. It was all a fairytale come true. It was really one thing having my lyrics come to life and getting them produced. But to have a Music Video for “Don’t Lose Your Star” was beyond my imagination. I really had an amazing team to work with “CVT” based out of Miami did a fantastic job! A great Director Ricardo Porven, and Producer Gaither Dawson Peden that made the impossible, possible. The person that really made it all happen was Egon Stephan Jr. He is so talented and hard-working and really put 110% into making this video legendary. I had the wonderful Joy Couture design my dresses also and really fit into the theme of the whole video. It will be very artistic and will definitely have viewers watch it over and over again.

Q: What was the most memorable gift you have ever gotten?

A: I had received something in mail from an old friend of mine in Romania and it was a hand painted portrait of me! It was so beautiful and one of the best surprises I had ever gotten in my life. It is now framed in my room!

Q: What advice do you have for people who want to make music their career?

A: Probably heard it countless times but, never-give-up! Every person you meet and work with, try to learn something from them or from the experience. Be open-minded to new ideas and ways you can help your future career. Always understand that you can try and do it all yourself but if you have no plan and no understanding of what you are getting yourself into, it might come heavy and discourage you. So do research and invest a lot of time in it. Most importantly, believe in yourself. You may have a lot of people who believe in what you do, but if you don’t believe in yourself first that dream of yours will never be fulfilled.

Bio

Carmen Corcoz was born September 7, 1986, in Sibiu, Romania. The singer-songwriter and actress first performed on stage at the age of 5, winning first place at a Talent TV Show in Romania. Carmen revealed many of her talents at a young age while performing live, demonstrating her vocal ability with pop, soul, and classical music. While just turning 9, Carmen and her family moved to Toronto, Canada to better establish a future for her acting and singing career. Continuing throughout her childhood Carmen’s poetry was published at the age of 13, winning a “Famous Poet Society Award” leading into her strong passion for songwriting. “I was always fascinated with poetry. One day I asked my mom why she named me Carmen, and she told me it meant “Poem” in Latin, so she started telling me poems, I instantly fell in love with just the idea of expressing in poetic ways.”

As a young artist, Carmen also wondered about the origins of music. Becoming a historian of jazz, soul and blues, she understood why music is not only important to her, but to all of us. She started writing songs while performing at numerous charity and community events, soon to get her voice discovered. Just turning 18 years old Carmen was asked to enter a Romanian Beauty and Talent competition in Montreal winning the title of “Miss Diaspora of Canada 2005”. Carmen soon went back to Romania to appear and perform on several TV shows, later to receive a congratulated appearance by the county’s own President Traian Basescu. “Music speaks to me in many different ways. I can’t imagine life without doing what I love and am best at. You always have to follow your dreams, no matter what the circumstance.”

In 2011 Carmen released her first EP called “Inspired” in affiliation with SickKids Foundation. The proceeds from song downloads and EP purchases went to the sick kids at the Toronto Hospital. The big affiliation was a way for Carmen to introduce herself as an artist who is here to inspire through her meaningful lyrics and music. Her outstanding work got recognition internationally, being published in several Magazines,  winning XS Artist of the Month at 99.1 Radio, and even capturing David Suzuki’s attention by performing at his event “Soupstock” in 2012.”I believe we all have a gift, and that gift is to give.”The inspiring artist released her most recent Single “Me and You” on YTV Canada July 2013, along with a Music Video that was produced by Kuya Productions and Jed Harper, receiving over 200,000.00 views! Her next Single “Dare to Dream” is set to release this year, featuring “Yexian”, a talented Reggaeton singer from Puerto Rico (www.yexianmusic.com). Carmen’s New Album “Poezia” creates a soulful mixture of Rhythm, Pop, Dance and Latin music drawing influences from the likes of Shakira, Leona Lewis, Rihanna, and Bruno Mars. “What I love about this album is that all the songs have a strong connection to something that everyone can relate to. I am excited to share my new music Internationally!”
