"Drive and Self-Determination Bring Big Success to Carolina East."

We meet a lot of artists here at The Newfoundland Herald. Our island is thankfully full of them, so there’s no shortage of folks filled with creativity and drive coming in and out of our doors looking to sell their stuff, so to speak. Some are good, some are excellent, but few have the drive and self-determination to succeed quite like Carolina East.

“If you’re being recognized for the hard work you’re putting in, that helps,” East said in a sitdown with The Herald. “This industry can be hard, it can be mentally draining and all of those bad things. It’s good to have that recognition that things are working and you keep pushing forward. Every day is something new.”

Crossroads
For her new album, Crossroads, East has solidified a successful relationship with monster producer Rob Wells and Shobha Lee, a team who have worked alongside the likes of Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Backstreet Boys and Newfoundland’s own Alan Doyle.
“It was fluid,” East said of the partnership turned friendship behind the new record. “We became really good friends last year. It was easier to be more open too about what you’re writing about. Hence, the songs are about things going on in my life in some way or another. The title Crossroads is fitting for East at this stage of her career. She shared that the past 12 months have been period of change and turnover, one that has impacted her, in so many ways, both professionally and personally.
“It’s where I am at my life right now. I’ve made a lot of changes in the last year, both professionally and personally,” she explains. “You can just see that the transition between last year and this year has been a great one. I guess the crossroads part of things is that I’ve gone the other way and things are on the up and up. Before, I wasn’t putting the work in. That’s where the Crossroads comes from, for sure.”
Carolina East will release Crossroads in physical format (digital available now) on Oct. 21st at Loose Tie in St. John’s. For more information visit her official social media pages and website carolinaeast.ca - Dillon Collins- The Herald

"NL’s Wicked Big Year"

There’s lots to be proud of as a Newfoundlander and Labradorian. Things like cultivating a worldwide reputation for hospitality and friendliness should be enough to get those good feelings of NL pride flowing. If that doesn’t do the trick, one only need look at what some of our very own artists and entertainers have accomplished this year.

Look at Mark O’Brien, for example. The baby-faced actor with that heart-of-gold demeanor has come a long way from his days portraying Des on Republic of Doyle. O’Brien has appeared in no less than eight feature films, starring alongside the likes of Hugh Jackman, Vera Farmiga, Dakota Johnson, Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Clive Owen, Forrest Whitaker and Mandy Moore. Our boy Mark done good.

Blockbuster Talents

That’s not to take away from the achievements of other acting talents. Percy Hynes White netted himself a starring role on network television series The Gifted. Locally shot and produced action series Frontier launched a thrilling third season (starring Aquaman himself no less), and established voice actress Jennifer Hale landed herself a role in a Disney blockbuster you’ve likely taken your younguns’ to in recent weeks.

Our musicians are still operating at an extraordinarily high level. Alan Doyle still tours tirelessly, packing venues from east coast to west and across the pond. Rising musicians like Conway, Carolina East, LeRiche and Mallory Johnson, earn critical acclaim. Hell, to kick off December, our very own Matthew Byrne and Earle & Coffin took home a Canadian Folk Award.

Authors? We still have some of the best in the world and folks still flock here from all over to soak in our surroundings to combat writers block. The likes of Bridget Canning, Joel Thomas Hynes, Gary Collins and Wayne Johnston have been recognized both at home and internationally, while familiar faces like Mary Walsh, Rick Mercer and Mark Critch have put pen to paper and offered up some insights into their own lives through published works.

NL’s Champions

In athletics we’re excelling at a level rarely seen for Newfoundland and Labrador. Our longtime flag-bearer Kaetlyn Osmond doubled down with gold and bronze medals at the Pyeongchang Olympics. Katarina Roxon continued her dominance in the pool, while Liam Hickey made a name for himself in sledge hockey. Carl English and the St. John’s Edge made their mark on the National Basketball League of Canada, while the Newfoundland Growlers entered the ECHL with a bang this past October, led by NHL vet head coach Ryan Clowe. We celebrated our historic 200th Regatta, and yes, Team Gushue dominated again, winning back-to-back Brier Championships. And we’re just gushing on entertainment here. What of our doctors, lawyers, philanthropists, politicians and the unsung heroes that bind everything together.

Yes, there’s always cause for negative. The economy is still shot and at times there’s as much or more reason to leave than there is to stay, but when you get into the nitty-gritty, and when you think about the stuff that counts, it’s a hell of a time to be a Newfoundlander and Labradorian. Wicked big year!

"We are thrilled to be returning to the beautiful city of Charlottetown in 2019 - a host city renowned for its hospitality and incredible live music," says Andy McLean, Chief Executive Officer of the ECMA. "A huge thanks goes out to the Province of PEI and the city of Charlottetown for their support of homegrown musical talent and for recognizing the economic benefits the ECMAs bring as a cultural event to the Island. It's going to be five days and nights of musical celebration and a surefire win-win for everyone!"

Further announcements from the ECMAs, including showcasing artists, conference details, and performers for the 2019 East Coast Music Awards Show will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Music PEI Canadian Songwriters Challenge
This year, ECMA has partnered with Music PEI to present the Music PEI Canadian Songwriters Challenge, providing artists with a unique opportunity to hone their songwriting craft through workshops, panels and pitch sessions throughout the event. Selected songwriters will collaborate together for two-days to co-write and record two demos in a recording studio in PEI. Artists will have the opportunity to pitch their songs to a panel of delegates, including music supervisors, publishers, labels, and other industry professionals from Canada and abroad. Participating artists will also have an opportunity to pitch their own catalogue of songs.

The Song & the Sorrow - Free Film Screening
ECMA is honoured to present an intimate screening of The Song & the Sorrow, a documentary featuring PEI singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan as she confronts the loss of her father to suicide and the legacy that he left behind. This free screening will be open to the public with donations being accepted at the door for the Unison Benevolent Fund, a non-profit charity providing counseling and emergency relief services to the Canadian music community.
