"Carron: Roots EP review"

Irish musicians Meabh and Mella Carron returned to the world of music last month to unleash their latest record, Roots. Following on from their fantastic debut album, this four piece EP examines various phases of the siblings’ lives, beginning with their childhood and concluding by contemplating what’s still to come.

The title track introduces things with a warm riff that builds bracingly behind an extremely stirring serenade. The atmosphere becomes increasingly ethereal on the way forward as the instrumentation washes chillingly through the senses. All the while, vibrant vocals continue to captivate across soft stanzas and cool choruses, forging a very affecting folk affair.

There’s a friendly feel to the gentle guitars that start “She’s a Fire” afterwards. The pace remains placid as the riffs relax underneath a resonant refrain that enthrals through to the enthusiastic chorus. The music and melody accelerate excitingly in the final minute before slowing down again for a graceful finish.

“Prison Robes” features a funky acoustic riff which rivets ahead of sobering singing. A haunting harmony arrives to arrest in the chorus, after which a salvo of slick strings paves the path to another moving melody. It all amounts to a tremendously touching and tranquil tune that’s consistently compelling.

“Marble Arch” opens ominously with a foreboding riff which grows more invigorating going forward. At the same time, a heartfelt refrain resounds rousingly across the air to ensure the proceedings reach an appropriately poignant stopping point.

Carron have composed an incredibly courtly compilation here, the style of which is extremely exquisite. The enlivening delivery of its vivifying vocals combined with its elegantly executed instrumentation gives rise to a truly enchanting assortment of folk songs that should impress a large listenership. You can investigate Roots for yourself on iTunes now. - Pure M Magazine

"Carron to Launch New Single at Whelan's"

Carron to Launch New Single at Whelan's
The Irish sister duo introduce Dublin to a medley of Pop and Celtic-folk music

Sister act, Carron, presents new music from their EP Roots at Whelan’s this Friday. The single 'Prison Robes' delves into the deep changes that recently occurred in their family life. The themes of family, relationships and change consistently reoccur throughout the EP. Pure M Magazine awarded Roots "Best EP 2016" back in April.

Infusing traditional Irish styles with American Folk, Méabh and Mella Carron harmonize to deliver stories about family illness and relationships. Carron have been compared to the likes of The Corrs and Fleetwood Mac. A tinge of country may even please the ear, as influences from Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton shine through.

A set of cover songs are also planned into the mix of originals for Friday evening, such as Blackstreet's hit 'No Diggity.'

Tickets are €5, doors 8PM - Hotpress

"CARRON @ Gigonometry (The Workman’s Club)"

The first thing we noticed from the band as they took to the stage was their image. Hints of glam added from the glitter on the faces of some piqued our interest before they began playing. As to the music they have a good deal going for them. Initially the opening harmony and finger clicks prove effective. It seductively teases you toward the band with how the timings are worked. Then a supple uplift from the rhythm saw everything cleanly come together. What is caught by the band in the approach was caught just right and left you impressed by how thorough a showing it proved to be. It also led them neatly to set up a decent version of Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ that flitted comfortably between harmonies.

They have recently released an EP called “Roots” and one of the tracks included on it is ‘Prison Robes’. One of the finer points on show with the delivery here was found in the firm stride that carries across in the rhythm. Where the dynamics seamlessly hold together is noted furthermore by the careful attentiveness of the vocals. In some ways the sleight of hand gives off a Fleetwood Mac vibe but the overall composure comes full circle in the latter progression to mirror the promise shown on the opening. They do trade on a celtic allure in their sound and the style bodes well on ‘Numb’. What is reasoned with crafts an offering of steady maturity and it is characteristically smart. While it doesn’t necessarily have enough volume in places at times the semblances do hold their own at the right moments. The eponymous ‘Roots’ was very much a crowd pleaser. The keen eye they have on their folk trappings captures an essence as everything builds. From this comes forth a broad and upbeat barrage in the tempo which is kept in check. Throughout the delivery as a whole it all comes across in a beautifully balanced way.

The closing two numbers from the band also had something proven about them. The neat display in the lyrical structure of ‘Marble Arch’ painted them in a very positive light. Breaking away from how it opens, there was also a strong consideration to the impact the pace of the delivery had as well. For the way the dynamics added countenance and consistency you acknowledge everything move up a notch from the band. More importantly, they felt extremely comfortable in doing so. Proving they are not a one trick pony with their closing number ‘Battle Lines’, the charm of the number is an aspect to be recognised in its own right. The dandy apparel is felt appropriately and there is a deftness to be admired from how the guitar is pitched. They took flight evenly as well where everything began coming together. The weight of the delivery as a whole yielded something that also situated the artistic merits where they need to be. - Unsigned & Independent

"Carron Launch A Heart-wrenching Video For Their Single ‘Marble Arch’"

Dublin-based, folk-pop sisters CARRON are set to make their mark this summer with a glowing video for their new single ‘Marble Arch’ off their debut EP ‘Roots’. Testing the waters at festivals such as The Lock-up and Spirit of Folk, along with high-profile slots at Whelan’s Ones To Watch, Abner Brown’s Barbershop, and We-Bloom at the Workman’s Club, CARRON set their sights on making a big mark in 2016 with the launch of their debut EP in a dazzling show at The Grand Social in April of this year.

Each track on ‘Roots’ explores a distinct phase of Méabh and Mella Carron’s life together, from childhood (‘Roots’), through adolescence (‘She’s Fire’) and dealing with sickness (‘Prison Robes’), to envisioning a future free from the mistakes of a generation past (‘Marble Arch’).

Fresh from the launch of ‘Roots’, CARRON are delighted to unveil the music video to their first single, ‘Marble Arch‘, available at the following link.

‘Marble Arch’, tells the story of two young sisters escaping from their morose family setting to a place of tranquillity, beauty and peace. They play in the comfort of one another, but this utopia of theirs is only transitory, and are guises to their trapped reality. ‘We felt this was an important message to illustrate, as there are many families who find themselves in similar circumstances – where children are left silenced by the conditions at home, and do all they can to distance themselves from
it.’

The ‘Marble Arch’ Music Video will be released on CARRON’s Social Media Platforms at 13:00 Friday 6th May 2016. The EP is available to purchase now on iTunes & Bandcamp.

Some words of praise from people who know things about stuff – Jim Carroll: “Simple, unadorned acoustic tunes with a smidgin of folk, a rub of trad and a big dash of pop, there’s enough potential on show from the Carron siblings on “Battle Lines” to mark them as ones to watch.”

The Last Mixed Tape: “Separating themselves from some the twee or overtly commercial pitfalls of the folk-pop sound, Carron’s ethereal textural voices give a depth to the music as a whole and allude to promising paths for the duo to take in future recordings.”

Remy’s Best of Music & Film: “CARRON have put together a collection of four tracks that provide plenty of variety and showcase both their talents and those of their band as musicians, and they’re definitely on the right path with regard toreaching a wider audience based on this evidence.”” - IMRO

"Jim Carroll's New Music - On The Record"

It’s always interesting to see when acts move from covers to original material. Dublin sisters Meabh and Mella Carron may have started their run with Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Florence & The Machine covers, but it’s the original material on their Soundcloud page which really grabs your attention. Bio

Formed in late 2014, CARRON began merely as a creative outlet for sisters Méabh and Mella Carron to record and perform harmonious duet covers of their favourite songs for family and friends. Coming from a musical theatre background and having both studied music and drama in college, they wanted to explore using their voices in different genres and styles, in particular traditional Irish and American Folk music. They take influence from both classic acts such as Simon & Garfunkel and Fleetwood Mac, as well as newer bands such as Tegan & Sara, Little Green Cars, or Rae Morris, aiming to combine a contemporary celtic sound with elements of pop music from across a number of generations.

In April 2016 they released their debut EP entitled 'Roots' which quickly shot to number 4 in the Irish iTunes album charts, and was voted 'Best EP of 2016' by Pure M Magazine and Gigonometry. They completed their first Irish tour with dates in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Belfast, and Limerick, including their UK debut show at the London Fleadh festival supporting The Coronas.

On June 30th 2017, CARRON are set to release their latest single 'Battle Lines' on all major downloading and streaming platforms.
