Caryn Kupferman

BandPopSinger/Songwriter

Gusty, literate, jazz-tinged acoustic rhythm and soul with the nuance of Cassandra Wilson, the passion of Laura Nyro, and the power of Bonnie Raitt. "Not since k.d. lang have I heard a voice with such unique, powerful proportions." - from cdbaby.com

Biography

Long Island girl teaches herself to play the guitar and tries her hand at writing songs. Travels Boston streets, San Francisco hills, the trails of Seattle, and the sweet trials of motherhood. Decades later, all roads lead back to music. With just a smattering of experience, she releases a debut cd in 2006. Produced by Evan Brubaker, (Holly Figueroa O'Reilly, Kym Tuvim, Edie Carey), Pitch Black Mile is a haunting blend of original jazz, folk and pop, featuring Eyvind Kang on viola and Joel Litwin on percussion. Kupferman spends the next year finding her footing as a solo performer in small venues around Seattle. It's all about the pull and power of her vocals - rich like chocolate and primal like mud. Think jazz meets folk meets funk meets poetry, with real time passion and relentless groove.

I don’t know how to tell you
I’m never coming backso all that you remember
I’ll leave you with all that
the laughter in my eyes
the skin upon my hand
I’ll leave you in a dream
so you can understand

blue white sun light
time swam through
I was not afraid
silence held me here with you
floating in this place

I don’t know how to tell you
I wish that you could know
the peacefulness that filled me
the moment I let go
and waves that crash the shoreline are crashing at you still
but all that I remember
is peacefulness that filled

aftermath
words and lyrics by Caryn Kupferman, ©socially inept music 2005

all I know was taken when you went away / I’m standing like a pigeon in the rain / all I know is dizzy from the vision that I lack / one step forward / takes me back / one step forward / takes me back / let some grace have held a blanket to you / let this night become the way I learn to pray / let some light have brought you blindness / blindness / in the kindest way / oh love, we hardly knew you / oh love, we hardly knew you

bigger than me

bigger than me
words and lyrics by Caryn Kupferman, ©socially inept music 2005

I’ve been trying to find my way strong
I’ve been hoping to prove my past wrong
‘cause I think I could love like the water at sea
rushing down / rolling in / racing free

but this lonely it lassoes me in
and it tells me the places it’s been
and it makes me afraid to set foot in the light
makes me long for the comfort of night

I know there’s a world out there
I know it can be forgiving
I just don’t know who should be forgiving who
I could let my heart run free
if I could just believe in freedom
if I could just believe

but it’s bigger than me
all this wanting and need
it’s bigger than me

so I’ll be shy when it comes face to face
I’ll be sure I am in the wrong place
but I’ll want you to see what is so hard to show
all the places I know I can go

I know there’s a world out there
I know it can be forgiving
I just don’t know who should be forgiving who
I could let my heart run free
if I could just believe in freedom
if I could just believe

but it’s bigger than me
all this wanting and need
it’s bigger than me
