"An Impressive Lyrical Journey"

This review is from: Beggars and Blues [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
As a debut album from a lone singer-songwriter this is an excellent first outing. Many of the tracks are similar in style, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - this woman is a master (mistress?) of the meaningfully-sung piano ballad, and there's a fair few on here. The subjects covered vary nicely - being your own person, relationships going awry, and even a look at a strange nightmare vision of a farm as Tim Burton might imagine it...

The production values aren't astronomical, but the album's style doesn't require it. It's an understated affair that simply begs to be listened to - I've had it on in the background and found myself stopping whatever else I was doing to pay attention to a particularly good song.

Stand-out tracks for me are the bouncy "Dancin", the two heart-wrenching mid-disc tracks, "Did I Tell You" and "Fade to Grey", and the pure-vocals story of a night awake trying to write a song in "Midnight Blues".

Casee Wilson has a gorgeous voice, can definitely write songs, and I'll definitely be looking forward to hearing more of her work.

Bio

Casee Wilson is a local singer-songwriter based in York. She has been writing for five years and is currently honing her skills at Access to Music. She is influenced by a wide range of music, from 80's pop, synth pop and electronica through to adult contemporary artists like Tori Amos and Florence and the Machine and couldn't tell you a single genre of music that has influenced her the most (her parents dragged her up kicking and screaming to a soundtrack of The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Kate Bush and Dire Straits). As a result, much of what she writes is eclectic in style and she dreams of inventing a new genre one day.

Casee is a self taught vocalist and pianist, and in 2010 released her first album, Beggars and Blues, on her independent label Tiny Cat Records. She is currently hard at work on an electronica EP under the name Blue Electric Angel, and recently filmed the video to the first track, Bellytrance, around York with several bellydancers. She has been played on BBC York's breakfast show, and recently guested on The Fox's Den show on Vixen 101 FM. In the past she has had a song selected for the soundtrack of short film ("Far Out") which went on to be shown at the Vancouver Film Festival. She has to date successfully completed February Album Writing Month 3 years running (writing 14 songs in 28 days) writing about topics as diverse as string, kittens and zombies. She can be found playing live around York and the surrounding areas and when she is not gigging or writing she enjoys aikido and chocolate.
