"Cash for Gold - "Cheerleaders" 08.09.2013"

The lyrics to “Cheerleaders” tell the tale of a band holding a Superbowl audience hostage and force-feeding them tunes. The huge brass horn section supplements the theme perfectly. It’s like a marching band decided to go buck wild – break out of formation, rip off their military jackets and have an impromptu jam sesh on the 50 yard line.

With the catchy hook “Cheerleaders / Wave your pompoms around” it’s hard to not sing. Or victimize the nearest freestanding object as your personal pompom prop.

In their playbook they have one strategy: “Let it roll.” An attitude that was probably inspired by the fact Matik and Weaving lived across the globe and utilized 2013’s digital perks, namely Skype and Dropbox, to assemble song parts into record resemblance.

We can’t speak for everyone, but the Earmilk cheering section is giving a standing ovation for this one. - Earmilk

Bio

Stephen Mowat (aka Matik, Co-Producer of NYC band Walking Shapes debut album TAKA Come On) and Jack Weaving (Vocalist, Dukes of Windsor) don’t know how to describe their angle. Actually I don’t think they really care what it is? I like to call it ‘Death Pop’.

I’ve heard everything from early Jane’s Addiction, to the Jesus and Mary Chain, and even I overheard one drunk chick describe it as Kasabian with killer vocals. The truth is they sound like ‘Cash for Gold’. Two guys Smashing out the tunes they want to hear. Stupidly destructive beats, Big Muff pedals, and hook riddled vocals spitting out tales of destruction, love and doom.

The guys met playing a festival somewhere In Oz. Weaving moved to Berlin with his band and Matik relocated to NYC. During the two years that followed ‘Cash for Gold’ was born. Matik delivered the beats to Germany and Weaving would write vocals. He hit Alan Moulder’s ‘Assault and Battery’ studios in the UK but decided to go with vocal the takes recorded in his bed using his iPhone mic. This set the ‘let it roll’ attitude for their songwriting/recording process.

They had a spread of buddies across the globe who liked to call themselves musicians, so they shipped a few tunes their way just to see what they could add. The only instructions were ‘do whatever the hell you want and then we’ll turn it into a record.’ And they did.
