Cast of Thousands

Cast of Thousands

BandRockAlternative

High energy melodic post-hardcore/indie rock trio from San Francisco - drums, bass, guitar with male/female vocals. Heavily influenced by Jawbox, Jawbreaker, Fugazi, Braid, Hot Snakes, Kent, Bob Mould, and Nada Surf. College AND commercial radio-friendly.

Biography

Cast of Thousands a San Francisco-based post-hardcore/indie rock trio staying true to its name. Following the departure of their former bassist (version 4.0 of the band), singer/guitarist Burt Hashiguchi and drummer Derrick Hostetter recruited Jennifer Yee, formerly of Bay Area alt-rockers, Enda, to make the trio whole again. Yee's vocals introduced a harmonic element to the band's combination of melody, hooks, volume, and intensity.

Since the new trio's formation, Cast of Thousands has opened for popular national acts such as Smoking Popes and The City On Film and performed at esteemed Bay Area venues including San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, Slim's, Red Devil Lounge, and The Bottom Of The Hill. Cast of Thousands' song "Wicked Smile" from their upcoming album This Is Where I Confess was recently featured on Bay Area modern rock radio station Live 105's Local Lounge program.

Lyrics

Wicked Smile

Written By: Burt Hashiguchi

Lonely widow in a hillside manor
With an unobstructed view
Waiting calmly for the sweet hereafter
Now that there's nothing they can do.

A beautiful disguise
To hide the ugly truth beneath.
Puppet master pulling strings.
Catch the wicked smile.
That bares its soul and bares its teeth
Hearts and minds are just playthings.

Optimistic in a drought, thinking any day it'll pour.
Karma's pulled a joke on you.
Like a beggar with your hands held out,
Having spent your fleeting youth.

A beautiful disguise
To hide the ugly truth beneath.
Puppet master pulling strings.
Catch the wicked smile.
That bares its soul and bares its teeth
While the walking wounded sing.

A beautiful disguise
To hide the ugly truth beneath.
Puppet master pulling strings.
Catch the wicked smile.
That bares its soul and bares its teeth
While the walking wounded sing.

Serenade

Written By: Burt Hashiguchi

This is where I confess.
A declaration of true intent.
You never would have guessed, oh,
Well, now you know.
Bid me just one request:
Let me sing for you till the end.
It isn't much, but it's
What I do best.

Like the maestro who taught me:
From the heart and with feeling.
Make the words feel like water
Flowing warm and welcoming.
I'll sing you love songs till the end.
Till I'm dead and gone.
Sing this love song in my head
Again. Again. Again.

And if I have passed your test,
Hold onto the fading threads
Of the serenade spun of gold
From lead.
Bid me just one request:
Let me sing for you till the end.
It isn't much, but it's
What I do best.
Leave your window smiling
and when you say goodnight to me
your words feel like water
Flowing warm and welcoming.
Even though the love song ends.
Even in cold silence.
I need you before and after.
I need you before and after.

I need you before and after.
I need you before and after.
I need you before and after.
Again. Again. Again.

01/01/00 (Y2K song)

Written By: Burt Hashiguchi

And now that the world hasn't ended,
I don't know what to do with myself.
"Don't be so surprised," you tell me.
But, did you know how much I was hoping?

Clock struck midnight
Auld Lang Syne and kisses abound.
World still spinning around,
but no apocalyptic end.
and all my hang-ups
brought me right back down to the ground.
Right back down.

I went outside to clear my head some.
I saw a couple in a nearby car.
What a way to ring in the New Year
- steal away and steam up the windows.

Lonely and empty,
I found myself desperate for a change.
Time to seek help
for the ups and downs.
and, in my freefall,
I almost tried to end it all:
I woke up behind the wheel of my car.

And now that the world hasn't ended,
I don't know what to do with myself.
