Bio

Castro's Beard is the name for the solo band project of songwriter/activist Daniel Cioper, also of the folk-rock band The Lovers. His influences mostly favor the classics in rock music such as Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, etc... and soul music such as James Brown and Fela Kuti.
Daniel started writing songs as a way to comment on the society and civilization (or lack of) and Castro's Beard reflects his most recent writings and some that have been growing for a while such as "My Salvation".
The band was put together in the fall of '08 when Dylan Fury and Daniel started playing together. The addition of Ryan Menzies on saxophone soon followed and the rest came not too long after.
Ryan's saxophone adds a swinging type of feel reminiscent of the hey-day of rock and roll. Dylan Fury's tight drumming compliments Daniel's songs nicely as well as Patric Doyle's inventive bass playing.
One could try and describe all the types of music that "The Beard" conjures: Reggae... Blues... Motown... Folk... Gypsy... Afro-Beat... Country, but really it breaks down to two words: roots music.
Yes, this is roots music with a message.
