"Cincinnati's next big musical export might well be CATHEDRALS, the intense and urgent young Post Punk four-piece who have been wowing crowds locally and have more recently been spreading their riveting style and sound beyond city limits. As a result of winning a regional band competition, the group was one of only two unsigned acts to play last weekend's two-day Lollapalooza fest in Chicago. Their 11:45 a.m. Sunday slot enabled the group to play before the miserable heat fully set in. They drew a small but enthusiastic crowd, surely winning over more than a few converts. The group nabbed some good press from the event in local papers, and they were featured prominently in a centerfold spread in the Lolla program. Cathedrals will ride their momentum back to town for a show at alchemize on Friday, where they will have their superb new four-song EP (featuring engaging, textural show staples like "Alive Inside" and "Skeletons of Our Future Lovers") available locally for the first time. The "Welcome Back" show is also a meet-and-greet for Nick Spencer's 2005 run for city council (Spencer is a co-owner of alchemize); admission is free, but a $5 campaign contribution is invited. Check citybeat.com for more coverage of Cathedrals at Lollapalooza, plus photos and reviews from the rest of the fest. 513-381-2400. (See Music.) -- MIKE BREEN"
