"Artist Of The Week: Catherine Tran"

Charlotte Browning
28/08/08

Check out the unsigned talent Whisper Mag has stumbled upon this week...

Catherine Tran's mesmerising tones demand being soaked up by whimsical listeners searching for aural pleasantries of the soothing kind. For an unsigned artist currently working on her debut album Ms Tran managed to capture my attention on hearing only one and a half of her songs at the Camden Barfly when she supported El Condor Pasa earlier this month.

On that evening (7th August 2008) the small, dimly lit upstairs room at Barfly was full of beer swigging gig-goers, all of whom quietened down to hushed tones in respect of Catherine Tran's delicate-voiced, guitar strumming presence. To put it simply – she sounded lovely. And balancing her large guitar (in comparison to her small body) appeared no mean feat either!

As yet there's not a wealth of Catherine Tran music or information available. However, trusty ole' MySpace can be relied on as usual and Catherine's space offers four songs from her demo which are well worth a listen, although her live performance betters her recorded sound in my opinion.

To make the comparison for yourself trundle along to one of Catherine's two upcoming London dates. Can't make it? The radio website Last fm is streaming some of Ms Tran's music - check out www.last.fm/music/Catherine Tran for a listen.

Bio

Born to Vietnamese parents in the seaside resort of Eastbourne on the south coast of England, Catherine first began performing live in public at 14 and from the age of 16, earned her apprenticeship as a solo artist by playing famous intimate acoustic London venues such as The 12 Bar Club and The Kashmir Klub. Soon after, Catherine tour supported Van Morrison, Al Stewart and Loudon Wainwright III. However, it was an invitation by Robert Plant to be sole support on his UK tour that demonstrated Catherine's ability to perform to audiences at the very highest level. An appearance at the International Music Showcase South By South West [SXSW] in Austin, Texas, USA, brought Catherine together with danish producer Joshua [MEW, KENT]. Within a year, Catherine had relocated to Copenhagen, had formed a band, recorded new material and toured throughout Scandinavia.

A meeting with US drummer and 'wunderkind' Joey Waronker [Elliot Smith, The Smashing Pumpkins, REM] results in Catherine and Joey recording the song 'Final Conclusion' at MOX Studio's in Copenhagen. In addition to producing the song Waronker also plays on it in characteristic style.

Three times Grammy award winning UK record producer Ken Nelson [Coldplay, Kings Of Convenience, Gomez, Paolo Nutini] and Catherine set to work recording several tracks at the legendary Parr Street Studio's, Liverpool.

2012 promises to be an exciting year for Catherine, bringing live dates, a summer of festivals and undertaking the recording of her debut album.
