"CATHY GIBSON CD ALBUM LAUNCH Tue, Nov 09 at 7:30 PM"

Sydney singer songwriter Cathy Gibson, guitar in hand, launches her new herself-titled CD Album at the Sound Lounge on Tuesday 9 November with a girl bag full of songs, by turns romantic, humorous, catchy, poignant and seriously responsive to world problems.

Written mainly over the last 10 years, the album's songs have a backdrop of life in the city by the sea, single parenthood with two daughters, and the Songwriter's extended family of musicians, artists, writers come actors/ musician/lawyers.

Ms Gibson will be in the company of a fabulous collection of musicians:

Renowned Sydney jazz players and composers Jonathan Swartz (double bass) and Hamish Stuart (drums)

Keith Young (legendary concertina player for String, Bow and Bellows).

Paul Berton (co-producer of the CD and guitarist for Looking through a Glass Onion, John Waters’ Tribute to John Lennon; guitarist for many stars including Renee Geyer, Jimmy Barnes, and currently with Leo Sayer,)

Alana Gibson, one half of sometime song writing duet, The Said Sos with Ela Stiles (bassist, singer from indie rock band Songs)

Reviews:
“Cathy Gibson possesses one of the sweetest voices in Sydney, reminiscent of Eddie Brickell and jazz songstress Phoebe Snow”-Club Acoustica

“Move over [is] nicely equal parts whimsy and lust. I never thought I’d use Midnight at the Oasis as a positive reference point”- Ross Clelland, Drum Media from review of Ms Gibson’s earlier CD, Not A Desperado.

Henry Fraser will be kicking off the night with songs from his band Henry Fraser and the Echoes.
- Sound Lounge at the Seymour Centre

"Trad and Now Music CDs Cathy Gibson"

- Self Titled CD Review by John Williams Cathy Gibson is a Sydney-based performer with a long history on the folk scene. She has been a finalist in the National Songwriter Awards and has appeared at many folk festivals over the years. In this CD, Cathy has written all the lyrics and composed the music. In addition, she has done the artwork for the cover of the CD. Talk about multi-tasking! Cathy has a very pleasant voice which she uses to great effect throughout the CD and she is accompanied by Alana Gibson and Ella Stiles as backing vocalists on various tracks. Her musicians include Keith Young on concertina, bouzouki and mandolin, Gary Bowen on dobro, Paul Berton on a variety of guitars, Jonathan Zwartz on double bass and Hamish Stuart on drums. ?If This Is Paradise? is a catchy opening track which draws you into the CD. It is a quirky song linking a laundromat with paradise! ?Burning Blues? is another catchy tune linking summer, drought, cricket and the Bali bombings. ?Tonight You?re Home? is a song about homelessness and sleeping rough. I found it thought-provoking as it conjured up images which are hard to ignore. ?Way That I Feel? is a melancholy song, it?s raining outside and negotiating the battle of relationships might just be too hard. ?Possession? is another relationship song with thoughtful lyrics. ?Meant To Be? is another well-written song about the pain of separation and the desire to be together. I enjoyed it. ?Silent Receiver? deals with the separation of a long-distance relationship and waiting for ?that? telephone call. ?Smoking? is a track with a self-evident message. ?La Tina? was an interesting track where Cathy uses her voice to great effect without using lyrics. I found it intriguing. ?The Chainsaw Song? was about two men who went chain-sawing and never returned. The only evidence of their passing was a lyrebird mimicking the sound of a chainsaw. ?Wheels? is about leaving for wider experiences. It touched a chord with me as it is just what my own daughter did many months ago and I have enjoyed watching her personal growth and experience all that this wonderful world has to offer. ?Elements? is another song about love and cleverly combines the elements in the lyrics. I enjoyed this track. The final track, ?Let That Go? is another fine track about having the strength to leave a relationship that isn?t working. I really liked the backing, especially the guitar work, throughout the CD which enhanced Cathy?s voice at all times. It was one of the main reasons I enjoyed this work. The production values were high which made for a very pleasing listening experience. Recommended. - Trad and Now online magazine, Australia

CATHY GIBSON music bio:
I'm a Sydney-based singer songwriter and guitarist who performs solo and has collaborated with country, jazz and other independent musicians, bands, writers, and visual artists.
For example at the 2010 Launch of my album "Cathy Gibson" at the Seymour Centre, Sydney), the band comprised Australian jazz musicians Hamish Stuart (drums), and Ben Waples (double bass); country and blues accompanist Paul Berton (slide and electric guitars, accompanist for blues and pop artists Renee Geyer & Leo Sayer); and backing vocals by daughters Alana Gibson and her sister,Ella Stiles (singer and bassist for Australian Indie bands "Songs" and "Bushwalking").

Musical Influences:
Vocals of Ella Eitzgerald, Billy Holiday
Folk Blues, Jazz, Latin, Celtic & Appalachian music & Songwriters In These Veins, eg: Gillian Welch, China Forbes (Pink Martini Band)

Other Creative influences:
After 11 years of living in the Australian Bush I moved back to Sydney in 1992 and recorded "Borderlines", an album of original songs about adventures and foibles of bush living, inspiration of family, friends and community while residing near Bellingen NSW, and performing with band "Sally and The Wattles".

Love and romance formed the subjects for originals such as "Sexuality", "Silent Receiver" and "Allergic to Love" . The song "Way that I Feel" records the ups and downs of a love affair in the context of local life in my small flat near Bondi Beach.
