""Breathes new freshness...""

Performance Review:

Cat Kinsey's presence on stage, alone, is enough to make you sit up and listen, but once she starts playing, that's when the lights really shine. Kinsey breathes a new freshness in the singer/songwriter genre. Her ability to mix influences of old in with a new, cutting edge style and freshness is one of the things that sets her apart from many of her contemporaries. With a uniqueness, vibrancy, and immediacy that was first heard in Laura Nyro and some of the early works of a young and gifted Joni Mitchell, Kinsey takes off and moves quickly and easily to new heights.

From the minute she sings the first note and plucks the first chord something happens, you're hers for the evening. As she moves through each spine-tingling personal revelation you feel as though you're peeking in the personal diary of a stranger, but by the end of the show, you realize that she's no stranger, but in fact she's a friend, a kindred spirit sharing her experiences and observations with the world and allowing the world to see her very personal inner workings. Her music is real, and it evokes an imagery that's as vivid as any that one can imagine.

Kinsey has a gift for constructing songs, her chordings and lyrics are truly exceptional, and she is on the way to doing great things. You can do no better than to catch this wonderfully talented singer/songwriter in an intimate setting before her well-crafted songs and beautifully sullen voice send her well on her way. - All Media Guide

Bio

Growing up in the heart of the Midwest, Cat was surrounded by open spaces and a family deeply committed to all avenues in the arts. From Broadway musicals to Willie Nelson and Dvorak, the Kinsey household rarely was without music. “Never was there a non-dramatic moment,” Cat recalls, “While my sister was wailing ‘Les Miserables’ to her reflection in the bathroom, my parents mellowed out to Lightnin’ Hopkins or Coltrane. There was little I wasn’t exposed to musically. And if I wasn’t at cello lessons, I was at art camp or dance...always doing something. In many ways, I’ve been performing since I was very young. It’s no surprise a love of poetry and literature developed so readily within me. Something had to balance all the chaos...”

Cat’s talent with the cello kept her in the classical world throughout college and can still be found on many artist’s CDs, including her own. It was while studying abroad in Italy that she decided to pack a guitar in lieu of the cello and began writing songs rather than studying. Cat travelled with her music everywhere from the boot of Italy to England and Ireland. When she returned to the United States she recorded a self-titled EP, headed West, and has never turned back.

Since the release of Perspective in 2003, Cat is touring nationally with a steadily building fan base supporting her. She performs regularly throughout Seattle and the Northwest and is currently finishing her new album, Filling the Deep, for release in 2005. Cat is a performing member of Indiegrrl and has participated in benefit concerts for World Harmony and The Solid Heart Foundation/In Harmony. Her music has been featured on various compilations and her debut album named as one of the Top 10 of the Year by Seattle Radio KBCS, Collected Sounds, and Kweevak.com.
